I like the idea of gold leaf. Is it difficult to stencil with?

no you just need to read the instructions there is a special glue that you put where you want the gold and then rub the gold leaf on it is really fun and has a very rich look. It is a bit messy as the left over gold floats to the floor. I am sure there are you-tubes showing how also but it is mot hard

I will definitely look into this. Great idea. But if I choose to paint, is acrylic paint (craft paint)

I like to use Modern Masters Metallics, but make sure you pick one of the gold colors that are opaque. Some of their golds are semi-opaque or sheer and will not give you good coverage unless you do several layers. Another source is to try the metallic stencil creams from Royal Design Studio.
