What fragrant annuals can I grow from seeds?

19 years ago

I'm looking to plant lots of very fragrant flowers in my garden this year.

So far, I'm looking at:

Fragrant petunias

4 o'clocks

nicotiania alta

Any others that I should try?

Thanks

Maureen

    Can't forget Stock :)

    Thanks Putzer - I've seen them listed under fragrant plants. Now I'm adding them to one of my orders. Any specific stock better than others?

    * Petunias

    * Heliotrope (not the easiest from seed but can be done)

    * Datura

    * Alyssum

    Nancy - I have some Sweet william in my garden that should bloom this year. Sweet Alyssum is one I already have seeds of and will be trying this year. Thanks for your suggestions.

    mxk3 - thank you for your suggestions. I have to check out Heliotrope - not familiar with that one.

    Datura inoxia is heavenly! Grows fairly easily from seed.

    Faltered, daturz inoxia sure is heavenly. My sister in Pittsburgh has it growing all over her garden. I can't plant it at this time, because my 2 yr old lab get into and onto too many things and I know it can be poisonous. I'll wait till he's older and not into too many things.

    Zaluskyana (or something like that) AKA night phlox a night fragrant annual from South Africa. I think T &M has the seeds.
    Moonflower- Ipomoea alba. Have to start indoors and it won't bloom till early fall, but it is great to vine up under your window.
    Nicotiana sylvestris. Be careful with alata that you get the white fragrant one and not the newer colored hybrids, which have less or no scent. N. sylvestris is about a foot taller than N. alata. Both may overwinter for you, and will also self-seed.

    Regarding which Stock...this year I have ordered Gurney's. I am still finding out what kind is the best, although this type is certainly the prettiest I have seen yet. Last year, I had Stock mixed with Nicotiana, four o'clocks, and Heliotrope in a bed-oh man, it smelled so wonderful at night!!!!

    Here is a link that might be useful: Stock

    MATTHIOLA longipetala bicornis Evening Scented Stock, although this one is somewhat straggly and not so good looking compared to other Stocks, however if you sow seed amongst other plants they look good as a filler plant and the plus side is in the evening they open and the fragrance is breathtaking!

    I haven't tried it yet, but there is a new Nicotiana out this year called... Nicotiana sanderae Perfume Deep Purple that is supposed to be fragrant.

    Some forms of nicotiana are very fragrant. I've grown the "eau de cologne" and "perfume delight" types, both supposed to grow about 20" tall, although mine were bigger. The fragrance was beautiful, and they were such an easy care plant. Nicotiana grows in sun or part shade, no pests, keeps flowering right through the heat. Another bonus for me is that deer and woodchucks don't eat them.

    sweet peas as well.

    I second Nicotiana alata....the old-fasioned white blooms only at night and on cloudy days.. is very fragrant and can grow rather big and tall. They will re-bloom and come back smaller if you cut them back after the first flush. Mine have re-seeded themselves quite well.
    Also like:
    Datura inoxia
    Evening Scented Stock
    Sweet Alyssum
    Nasturtium
    Lemon Bergamot (Monarda citriodora)
    Pincusion Flower(Scabiosa atropupurea)

    I'm standing up taking this picture of the Clearwing Hummingbirds Moths sipping nectar from the Nictotiana! This was an occurance every evening...what a joy!

    Fragrance lists never mention snapdragons, but I love their sweet bubble gum scent. Very delicious.

    I havent seen Dahlberg Daisy mentioned here yet, which is very easy to grow from seed. It is in the thyme family, grows about 4 to 6 inches tall, and spreads like a ground cover. The plants are very wispy and are smothered with yellow blooms all season long! I dont know if it reseeds, but you can collect seeds very easily.

    I use it en masse in front of plants that I am growing for the first time and am unsure of how long they will bloom, so that I know the dahlbergs will still have color. I love to weed around them (and weeding is the only maintenance necessary for them) because touching the plants releases its fragrance.

    I will see if I have a decent picture to post.

    If you would like some of my collected seed, just let me know! I have tons of them.

    Here is the best picture I have of my Dahlbergs, although it was taken earlier in the season. These plants actually get even more loaded with flowers and filled out the bed more. Cheery yellow blooms and fragrant too!

    I resized the picture to 75% so that you can see the plants closer, hope it isnt too big.

    try Mignonette. Easy to grow, may reseed a bit, and Napoleon gave it to Josephine. Doesn't look like much, so plunk it in with other stuff.
