To repot or not to repot

This isn't a question about a specific and actual problem: it is a general question, for discussion :)

What would you do if a plant started to show signs of root rotting during the early winter? Would you wait for the appropriate spring time to repot, or would you repot immediately without disturbing the healthy roots?

And what if it happened during mid winter?

If the answer is highly dependent on the species, let's put this with three cases: a) a pine/juniperus; b) one with broad-leafed, perennial foliage as an Acer palmatum; c) a tropical like Ficus retusa or Carmona microphylla.
