If your question were about daffodils, the answer would be no. The bulb needs all its leaves to feed it and prepare it to bloom next year.

However, your question is about tulips. You won't get ten percent of your tulips to repeat bloom next year no matter what you do, and the few that do bloom will be ten percent the size. Pull them up (or cut at the root) and throw them away. Tulips are treated as annuals in the south, and evidently on up into what we call the north as well, if you can believe most of the posts here.

I went through a period where tulips did not do well. I think they had a virus because when they came up in the spring the leaves were distorted and I got very few blooms. I dug them up and threw them away and waited a while before planting more. I got some as a gift, planted them and they've come back every year bloomed beautifully and actually have multiplied. I've bought tulips at the end of the season at WalMart for 75% off and they've come back. I always leave the leaves until I can easily pull the stems out of the ground. Maybe that's why mine do so well.

Thanks you guys!! All of the nice apartment complexes in Atlanta have tons of tulips and I know they don't dig them up every year so I hope they do ok next year. I was hoping to cut off all the leaves but one per plant and hope they would bloom good next year. I hope you all have a great gardening season. Judy
