Is this the style planter you are looking for (see link below at Gardeners Supply). The items from this company are pricey but well constructed. You can check out their reputation at GardenWatchDog.

Also if these are and you are put of by the price I've seen these at the big home stores in the spring - summer months so you could try looking for them then.

Something like this is just exactly what I have in mind. I'm buying it for someone who wouldn't have a problem with the price that they're talking about. The only problem I see with them is that they're a little too small for the area that I need them. I'll check out Gardener's Supply more carefully. Maybe they can help me out somehow.

Home Depot sometimes carries the square planters but they aren't nearly as nice as the ones at Gardener's Supply (no water resevoir). I am not sure if they are bigger or smaller than those but if you don't go with the ones there check Home Depot (in season).

I have forgotten the name of the sedum, but it could beRosy Glow maybe. Whatever it is , it is a common one and it is the sprawling kind, not the upright ones you see. The site I'm sending you to says that it is hardy to -40 degrees!!! Is that possible? Anyhow, they're very hardy, and for the winter, I just take the whole wire basket and lay it down on the ground somewhere and cover it with just a little protection. Come Spring, they're ready to go right back up. Just when everyone else's garden has gone by, this garden with the sedums really comes to life.

{{gwi:5081}}. This is at a friend's garden that I'm trying to help out. You'll notice, of course, that those are hydrangeas in there. I'm big on hydrangeas and you'll see me a lot over on the hydrangea forum. In my zone the pretty Macrophyllas are not hardy enough to bloom, but I've learned how to overwinter them and I have hundreds that I overwinter. If you're interested, there is a verrrrry long thread over there that I've detailed lots of overwintering techniques. Search for something like "hayseedman overwintering winter protection" if you should be interested.

Thanks Hay. I love the hydrangea in the white square pot and other pictures you have! I wish I could grow Hydrangeas -- I did buy two that have never flowered they just bush out and look green all season. These were bought at a local nursery and are supposed to be hardy in my zone. I'll post the variety over in the hydrangea forum may be you could help me or someone else there...

The pot does look similiar to the one at Gardener's Supply. Did you notice that there you can get different finials? If you look at the guide - 'Gardening with the Terrazza System' they talk about how you can put them together into larger systems and replace the finials. I don't know if you saw this. After looking at these planters, I am now looking at getting one!

I have the paper version of the catalog from Gardener's Supply, so I've been checking it out. The real problem is that the ones they offer are just too small for where they're needed.

In the catalog, they mention that they're made by Marchioro. Google led me to this page for their USA reps. I called them and someone is supposed to get back to me. We'll see.

There is a link there for seeing their product line which would never load for me. It's in Italy and maybe the time difference was a factor. This morning before 7 AM I finally managed to get to the Italian site, but there wasn't very much information there and no mention of these pots at all that I could see.

(The pretty pink and blue hydrangeas set their buds that will become the flowering stem in the fall before the summer that you see the bloom. They're mostly native to coastal regions and in that microclimate, they don't have the extremes in weather that you and I do. If our harsh winters don't get the buds, then they will most likely break dormancy too soon in the spring only to get zapped by the next frost. Endless Summer is a new mophead on the market which is supposed to bloom on new wood. We'll see. Blue Billow is a lacecap whose origins is in the moutains away from the shore. It blooms every year for me without any winter protection at all. Good luck. )

Those planters are sure nice looking at that web site. Web site is kind of clunky though! Having been to Italy where things are very 'relaxed' it may be a while before you hear of anything. Can you post here or email if you find out anything? They have some nice looking stuff. Hubby may be getting me the planter at Gardeners Supply for my birthday (I've hinted enough about it!)

So thanks for the info on the hydrangeas I haven't had time to look up the exact variety. It was a blue lace cap variety if I am remembering correctly. I am kind of mad because it was bought at a reputable nursery in my town and they shouldn't have sold it to me if it wouldn't grow in my climate. My husband's family has a cottage on the shore that may be I could move them to. May be they would do better there but this is a hassle!

I looked at your links and they were very helpful. Right now, your second link above looks the most promising to me. I didn't see any mention of the actual size of the container, which I thought was kinda strange, but if you click on the link for shipping you do get an estimate for the shipping container which is "23 inches length x 19 inches width x 6 inches height" It comes in sections, so I would think the 23 inches might suggest the height and the 19 inches might suggest the width. Very close to what I want. They also said that you can return them to any Target store. Looks promising. Thanks.

I spent some time last night searching and found that a good way to search was to go to Google Images and search for "planters". A picture is worth a thousand words and I got several leads that way. None of them beat what you've come up with, though.

Hay, good job consolidating all the options. Have to save this in a file! Too much to consider. Wish that Target had those planters in the store. Josh, thank you for your link. Those are very pretty, but I think that they're probably too pretty and formal looking for the setting.

But, it's not really my choice either.

I think my friend, who has more money than I do, is going to be trying one from Walpole Woodworkers. It's a little too squat looking to be ideal to my eye, but given the choices, it is a fine looking one. It's size is about 18 inches deep and 24 inches square. I like the volume. The smaller ones would be difficult to keep watered as they sit out in the hot sun.
