Depending on the variety of sweets, the vines may easily choke out the herbs and will definitely shade them a great deal. Sweet potatoes vines love to take over their area and then some. ;)

Otherwise, I don't know of any problems except keeping the soil nutrients needed for the sweets from making the bed too rich for herbs - most herbs don't tolerate overly rich soil all that well. If you go with a bushy variety of sweets like Vardaman there would be less problems but the plants still get pretty big.

Last summer I planted my sweets in a row next to some of my herbs.(parsley, thyme, chives, etc.) It sure didn't affect the potatoes, but every so often I usually take a hoe and lift the potato vines a little and re-route them in order to keep them from covering over the herbs. They were pretty happy with the arrangement!

digdirt~ SP's need lots of nutrients? LOL maybe that was my problem with them last year... Nah, I think I just started them too late.

I have space on the right side of the bed, and am thinking of either "training" the vines out that side, with the herbs on the left, or trellising the vines.

sweet potato is good weed suppresant so herbs could come off second best, but then you don't need to let s/p vines ramble i keep feeding mine around the main root and over itself or trim them off, they will still produce. so no need to use trellis which realy won't help that much, also young tips and leaves can be eaten like spinach, just wilt them with steam.
