I don't know what you can do to help your hen, other than place food and water where she can reach it, make her roost very easy to get to (offer a ladder maybe) and just give it time. Make sure it is something like a sprain and not Bumblefoot or some kind of injury--pick her up and thoroughly check her feet and legs over, especially the pads. See if she yelps or jumps when you feel her legs, check to make sure she bends the leg and grips with her foot--it will help you determine where the problem lies.

I once had a large, heavy hen who hurt one of her legs by leaping off the roost one morning in a fit of high spirits. It took a LONG time to heal since she couldn't very well stay off of it, and actually I suspected a slight fracture. Since she was kind of wild and was getting around OK, I let her alone and she eventually healed up and was fine.

Thanks for the information Velvet. She is getting around fine but sure doesn't want me to pick her up. I don't see improvement, but as long as she is eating and her friends are sticking by her I will just let her be.

If she doesn't get better, you can always "invite" her to Sunday dinner! =D

That is so funny but sure is something to think seriously about. We look at cute little bunnies and love them but hate the rats and mice that mess up our world. We raise Cornish X's for 7/8 weeks and then have them butchered and sold. I have no problem at all with that. They are eating and pooping machines and no fun at all!!! They grow so fast that their legs will give out after 8 weeks anyway just because they are so heavy.

These hens, however are such a hoot! We love them, love to watch them and it is great to have them around. Nope, we couldn't even consider inviting this one to dinner.

Well, just thought I would give an update (just 5 days later). She is doing so much better and should be 100% in another week or so. I am amazed at how fast she healed. All that worry for nothing!

I'm glad she's improved! Mine constantly astound me. One of my Scratch 'N Dent Sale freebie hens from the feed store, Maggie, has one foot with all the toes curled to one side, she injured her curled foot recently and just SAT for about 5 days, we had to carry her in and out of the coop. She healed up and is now just fine, but for a while there she had us worried.
