I have a few of both breeds. That is not a Speckled Sussex.If its any consolation, there's not much differance between the two breeds except color.

It's either a barred rock or a Dominique. Hard to tell from this picture. A Dominique has a rose comb, the barred rock has a single comb.

It is helpful to know it's not at least Speckled Sussex...

Now I assume it's Barred Rock since the farm where I bought them had leghorn, speckled sussex and Barred Rock. The guy probably got confused by which one is barred rock.... ;(

Our niece and nephew named her "stripy" which won't be changed anyway. :)

It's a barred rock. I've had them for 10 years and always been pleased with how dependably they produce.

I agree with Barred Rock. It could be a Dominique - the two breeds look much alike except for the comb. Barred rocks have a single comb; Dominiques have a rose comb.

But it's definitely not a Speckled Sussex... a Speckled Sussex has very distinctive feathers with russet and and/or iridescent blue green with a narrow band of white and a black tip.

I've had Specks and Doms. They are both good dual purpose breeds. I'm sure Barred Rocks are much the same... They have always been deservedly popular. Not sure about their tendency to broodiness though.

A tip for the future. Day old Barred Rocks and Dominiques are mainly black with a light patch on the head. Speckled Sussex are shades of russet and buff, with chipmunk striping. Nothing alike at that age!

Barred Rocks are wonderful. My Barred Rock roo, Jack, was a perfect fella in every way, they are an excellent breed.

Yep, Barred Rock. I agree with Maggie and Velvet, (as usual!) Wonderful, dependable layers. No flock should be without at least one! Enjoy her!

That said, Speckled Sussex are fabulous, too. But your chicken is definitely NOT a Speckled Sussex!
