Sure, it works fine. Prune the male to be much smaller than the female, like 1/5th the size. You don't need that many male flowers to pollinate all the female flowers.

as with any tree .. i would not put them EXACTLY together..

you need to plant for trunk expansion, resuming success ...

so i would put them at least a foot or two apart..

Ken, based on my experience it doesn't really matter if they touch, the trunks will eventually grow into each other.

The one thing you do want to do is to make sure to allocate leaf space exclusively for the male and the female respectively, otherwise pruning becomes a mess. You will need a total area of at least 3'x8' for the bushy "head" of the two vines at the minimum. In this small of a space you will need to be pruning several times in the first half of the summer to remove all the long shoots coming way out. If you have more space than 3'x8' that would make it easier.

I believe it is best to plant them together but be sure you have both clearly and permanently identified so the female gets the majority of space but the male is well spread around. The closer the male flowers are to the females probably the more consistent will be the harvests.
