For those in the hot south, what do you plant after early crops?

Or if you have to pull up a squash plant because of SVB? I have been plopping okra seeds in my open areas, but I've got more than enough. What else will germinate in this heat? Anything or just leave bare?

There are numerous southern pea varieties, okra, sweet potato, amaranth, malabar spinach, and watermelon. It 's early in the year yet so I'd say take your pick...I don't know where you are and maybe it's too late for you but we still have lots of time for planting in Central TX. I'd make sure I had the winter squashes planted and I'd get more summer squash in the ground too. Sometimes later planted squash will do better. I usually plant beans all summer long. I like pole beans because they keep on going but every time I have some space, I stick bush beans in it.

It won't be all that long before it's time for planting the fall stuff so I'd have those things ready to go into the ground by the end of July or so. Now I am not an expert and the above is just my opinion but I have lots of experience gardening in the south.

I usually don;t leave any spots unplanted, waiting for late summer sowings of fall crops. I do like to plant sweetpotatoes in some open areas. Almost no care required for these, and their vigorous growth keeps alot of summer weeds from germinating. Dave

Where do you get sweet potato starts or pieces? I think I'd like to try those.

Too hot here in Zone 10 Florida for regular pole beans but Chinese yardlong beans do well through the summer.

marti, most feed&seed stores have sweetpotato slips (rooted cuttings) in early June in this part of SC. Sold in bundles. Maybe in late May where you are. They're easy to propagate yourself from last year's tubers as well. Dave

I didn't do it last year, but I"m going to do it this year, that is plant more squash. I actually got a later start this year, and it just might be to my advantage (FINALLY, my tardiness is a positive). I have been checking daily for SVB eggs, and hand picking squash bugs off. So far (knock on wood) NO SVB, and I've picked my first baby squishes, 6 so far...woo hoo.

I'm going to start these seeds tomorrow I think, it will be a few weeks before they can go out and that will be about perfect. end of June plantings.

This year also for the first time, I planted peanuts!! I started them in my greenhouse in a starter tray and I put out just one tray (36) plants. It will be fun to see what comes from them too. I think they are a heat loving plant? I think I may start more of them too, these I will direct sow into the garden :)

Basil seems to do fine with the hot of summer here, and they are great bee magnets!!
