Plant them as soon as possible. If they are real dry you might soak them for an hour in water. But not too long. I would say 2 hours maximum. Get them into the soil as soon as possible. If your bed will take some time then plant the roots in a spot and dig them up when ready. They will do so much better in moist soil. Or plant them all into one 5 gallon bucket of moist soil until the bed is ready. I would not wait more then one week on this one. You dont want them to grow just to get healthy.

Bob, I bought some bargain asparagus several weeks ago. These were Jersey Giant. I too wondered if I had done the right thing, but the bargain was too good to pass up. One of the posters on this forum, Hercules, gave me excellent advice and every single one of those roots has become lovely strong ferns. Hercules told me to fertilize fairly heavily with 10-10-10 twice during the growing season. So don't forget to use some of that specific fertilizer. Good luck.

I got them in the ground as planned, mixed in some rich compost and watered them in.

It was really hot Sunday which made me a bit concerned. That even though planting was complete before noon.

We'll see...it's since cooled off a bit with a little rain.
