JT's Milwaukee Adventures!

17 years ago

Ok, there are too many pictures of JT's adventures yesterday at Milwaukee's Mitchell Park Domes to fit in a slideshow at Photobucket! Ack! I am just going to have to give you the link to my photo album so you can see them for yourself.

To give you some background on where we went. The Mitchell Park Domes (referred to as the "Domes" around here) are three glass domes that are 140 feet in diameter and 85 feet high at the highest point. They are connected by a lobby that is often used for wedding receptions and parties. One dome houses tropical plants with a waterfall and small pond. Another dome represents arid plants like cacti, succulents and desert palms. The third dome is for seasonal floral displays which are changed every few months. It is one of Milwaukee's lesser known attractions. I lived about a mile away when I was a kid so our family went to see the special display dome every time it changed. I loved the place as a child and it is still mesmerizing as an adult.

Here are some highlights...

Here is JT with the new doll I gave her before we went to the Domes.

In the tropical dome, JT jumped down into this giant fern!

{{gwi:126980}}

JT really liked this pink and yellow orchid. I think it is because it kind of looks like her!

{{gwi:126981}}

She was a little rascal! She was climbing trees, sitting on plants and climbing up the rocks! Here she is sitting on a little cactus. he-he

{{gwi:126982}}

Next thing I know, she is sitting on this stump saying, "I cannot tell a lie ..." Yikes! We were lucky we didn't get kicked out of there!

{{gwi:126984}}

JT couldn't decide which flowers she liked best in this dome. They were all gorgeous!

{{gwi:126985}}

Here are the goodies I took out of the Junk Train:

There were a bags of buttons, beads and little things like a tiny bottle and rabbit. They are all in the amber bowl that was in the box too. I always wanted buttons and bits to create altered art (google Jane Ann Wynn's Altered Curiousities). There were two pretty white tiles with flowers on them. I turned one over to show the pretty bluish glass that was in the box too. There was a bag full of it so I just took out a couple of pieces for the picture. The picture doesn't do it justice. The three things in front are clear glass blanks (for want of a better term) that I imagine you could etch or mosaic (my intention).

{{gwi:126986}}

The reason the box weighed about 50 pounds was because of these heavy tiles! I will use them in mosaic projects but I thought they would work well as bases for little fairy house vignettes too. The wooden bowl is carved in the center. Not sure what it is but I like it!

{{gwi:126987}}

This is the pretty amber bowl, a racoon bell and, one of my favorite things in the box, a pair of gold cowboy boots! The racoon bell has a little chip in it but I'd like to see if I can cut it in half and use it in a mosaic piece.

{{gwi:126988}}

These were the fun rustic bits and pieces in the box. There were some leather cords, a piece of driftwood, Ohio "buckeyes," stones and beach glass from Junk Train stops and some wonderful little bottles. It almost looks like the makings of a windchime hanging from the piece of drift wood doesn't it?

{{gwi:126989}}

Believe it or not, I am leaving some things in the box! The box isn't very big but folks sure know how to pack it. I will have to have my Bob pack it for me. He can fit 50 pounds of sh!t in a 10 pound bag. he-he

Watch for future adventures with JT!

    Wow. Those are beautiful gardens. How great to be able to see a wonderful garden in the winter. Luna, sorry the box was so heavy but I just had to share my tile booty with you - I know how you love to mosaic. I found it when I stopped to pick up some dumped broken concrete and it was on the other side of the pile under a bush that was also dumped. I stopped at that site maybe 3 or 4 times to get all I could. Here is a picture of JT with all the tile that I got.

    Sugarmaple, when my Bob picked up the box, he said, "What's in here, cement?" He wasn't too far off the mark! lol! When I first opened up the box, I couldn't figure out why it was so heavy ... that is until I got to those tiles in the bottom. I love the natural color so I'm sure I'll find some good use for them.

    JT has been behaving herself the past couple of days. But she keeps saying we have to go somewhere this weekend that will top last weekend since it will be her last weekend here! Gosh, she is demanding!

    JT's sure getting spoiled, she won't want to stay home when she finally gets there!! The Domes is a beautiful park, it is a lot like the Huntington Gardens in San Marino,Ca. DD & family took me there last year but most of flowers were outside, except ferns & rare flowers. I thought it was so nice but I love the pic of the masses of flowers with the pink & blue,so yummy!!!And inside too!! Great place to get inspired for planting pots or bed of flowers! Jan

    I forgot to add this picture ... I also got this pretty hummingbird planter out of the Junk Train.

    {{gwi:126990}}

    I also thought I'd share a video of the light show they put on at the Mitchell Park Domes at night. It is very cool! The link to the video at YouTube is below.

    Tomorrow I'm not sure where we will take JT. I wanted to take her to a special museum here in Milwaukee until I found out it costs $16 a person to get in there! Yikes! So we will try something else. She is dying to do something here in Milwaukee and I'm trying to fulfill her wish! Just stay tuned for more pictures!

    Luna, sure looks like JT is having a wide variety of experiences there. I love how sweet she was visiting your Mom, and feeding the goldfish. LOL.
    That hummingbird planter is lovely! I spied the 2 little brown bottles from AZ in your "keep pile".
    Its amazing the amount of stuff that little ol' box can hold. Tho you might have to get a new one after all those heavy tiles, LOL. I did, cause I got ROCKS. Wooo Hooo.
    Bet the Post Office isn't too fond of our Junk Train!!
    I'm dying to know what JT is going to do next. I've caught her album up...got a bit behind on it, sorry about that.

    hugs, Karen

    Luna, you really chose some good junk! I recognize the little gold boots, as I loved them too, but could never figure out what to do with them! Glad they found a good home :-)

    JT is having such a diverse time with her travels. What fun she's having there in WI!

    I loved the video of the Domes. How cool! ~tenderlee
