Made my first fairy house

I started with a blank birdhouse from Hobby Lobby. Added bark (did you ever iron rolled up bark?), moss, and other goodies. I put it on a piece of slate. I spent yesterday walking around in the woods gathering interesting things, it was such a beautiful day! Anyway, my basement craft area is a real disaster, but it was a fun project. The light by the door is a marble inside an acorn cap. Debating about the butterfly on top - it is supposed to give it "scale" - how small the house is compared to a normal sized butterfly type thing. Opinions?

I forgot to add that this is to sell at an outdoor garden themed craft show, would you buy such a thing? They are really intended for inside or a sheltered area because all the dried things will turn to mush in the rain. A new venture for me - and I need input!

Oh my gosh!!!! That is truly a work of art!!!! I think the butterfly is perfect to show scale. You did a fantastic job!!! Wow....you could make a fortune selling those. I want one!!!!!!

Oh...Arlene...that is absolutely beautiful! A true work or art!

Would I buy something like that? Oh...you bet I would! I love it! And...the butterfly looks lovely on it!

The lamp by the porch is too cute! It reminds me of the tiny rolled up newspapers I used to put on the front porch rugs of the birdhouses I used to paint and decorate.

It is lovely, you should definately do well selling those. I think i would prefer it without the butterfly as i like a more natural and rustic look, but it also looks fine with it.The marble inside the acorn cap is a great idea I bet the local fairies can't wait to move right in.

It's simply enchanting! I love how you made the light. That's pure genius! I think many people would be thrilled to buy their very own. You better make alot of them, because you will sell out in minutes!

Really, really cute. I love the marble/acorn light. I predict it will sell fast.

I love it!!! I think it will be a major hit at the craft sale. You need to make a few more...(-: I love how you used the bark and put it on the birdhouse(-: Great ideas and it all turned out just beautiful!!!!

I love, love , love this house! How charming is THAT? So cute! I am doing birdhouses with found pieces of stone and wood and also broken plates. You've inspired me to try something new!

As far as sales, I'm SURE will sell all you can make. One question you will be asked is if the greenery will change color as it dries. Is there any way to preserve it?

I LOVE the lamp, and will steal that idea, and hope it's ok! What a wonderful idea.

All the best to you with these delights! Let us know how to find one!

This is so weird! I was just trying to talk some friends into going to a workshop on how to make fairy houses in March. There is an art center in Mineral Point, Wisconsin - Shake Rag Alley Art Center - that is offering a workshop by artist Tatiana Katara. I just love her fairy houses! She also makes beautiful fairy furniture.

Yours looks very similar to some of her houses. You can see her work at the link below.

    Great job!

Thanks all for the encouragement and feedback! You know how you sometimes doubt your handiwork. I do have more houses in the making. I'm still waiting to see if I can get in this craft fair but they need pictures, so I had to get busy. I also want to sell the little fairy gardens made in pans and basins.

Luna - that was an interesting link - thanks for sharing that!

Daisyme - the moss is already dried and from a bag - so I don't think it should lose the color unless in direct sunlight for an extended period of time. You should post pics of your work! Sure - steal the light idea - I'm not sure it was mine anyway, I've looked at so many books, websites and fairy houses on eBay!

Susiesunshine - you are TOO much! Like someone asked before, who winds you up every day?!!

I think making them will be the easy part, and pricing will be the hard part.

    Thanks again for the input!

By the way, what is with this having to give our email address to post? I see lots of spam coming my way...... Is this the "new" update to the board?

Hey Arlene! That fairy house is fabulous!!!!! i too especially like the marble/acorn porch light. Keep up the good work!

Arlene it's wonderful! I like the butterfly. If's it your first I want to see the next one. Good luck with the sale.

Your fairy house is absolutely fantistic! I love the rustic look of it and the light idea is so unique. What did you use for the door knob? You certainly used a lot of imagination in the creation of such a cute little house. I would most definitely buy one.

OK - this is a little embarassing, the doorknob is a miniature plastic potato I found in my craft supplies! I hoped no one would notice. LOL

Fantastic! I really like the feather and milkweed seed(?) touches! I also like the slate underneath. I've occasionally used slices of tree trunk under some fairy houses I've made. Didn't you love making yours?
I did a beach themed fairy house for a friend of mine at Christmas. It was a challenge because I had to do the interior and exterior but I think it turned out quite well.
Please post photos of any more houses you make!!!!

Arlene, I was wondering the same thing last night about having to enter my online name and email with every post. I'm glad it is back to normal tonight!

I do love that acorn light and all the feathers and fluff caught in the moss! What did you cover the outside of the house with? Is it some sort of bark?

mmgirl - you should post some of yours or send me some pictures. Would love to see them. Yes, it was fun - but very messy - that moss is very very messy!

luna - the outside is covered with bark. There is a park near me that has several trees that shed bark. Last fall I went and picked up a big box of it. By now it is all dry and curled, so I used my steam iron on it to get it flat again! I pick up any feathers I find on the ground and also have some in my supplies leftover from making dream webs (my son was into them for awhile). We have lots of milkweed growing in our field, so that's where the "fluff" came from.

Thanks again to all for the encouragement!

Just the most amazing house! I saw some a while ago on the web, They were very expensive. Yours is much nicer!! I would like to move in!!!
    Keep up the great work!

Oh this is just darling and yes I would buy it at a craft fair. The whole thing is just adorable but that marble with the acorn cap is fantastic. I love it.

    Sal

NMgirl, yes post photos of yours too, please.

Arlene, I will just have to "ditto" everything that everyone else said about your fairy house!!! Its wonderful and incredible and I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I have been planning for months (how embarrassing) to make one and have the wood birdhouse from Michaels. And tons of little stuff gathered to play with. (I hear the road to "someplace" is paved with good intentions. LOL)

Oh, at Goodwill the other day, I found a FAIRY TREE. There is no other explanation for it. I'll have to take a photo but its so perfect for a fairy garden, and it's going in mine soon as I get the photo. Its even purple!!!!! LOL.
Well, lavender anyway. I swear I think its made with duct tape! If so, what a great idea.

    hugs, Karen

Beautiful and very creative. I'd love one to put out on a covered porch or deck.

    Arlene,
I can't stop looking at this little house...it's so cute!

The tree trunk is really interesting material. What is it? Where did you find it? Is it wood?

    ~Sandy~

    Sandy

The tree trunk is a wood burl (sp?) that I actually got from Karen (purplemoon) for my secret santa gift!! It had a hummingbird attached to it, and I thought it looked like a great tree trunk. I hope she doesn't mind I repurposed it. I'm really getting into these fairy houses, I have several more going I will try to finish up in the next few days and post more pictures. They are quite fun to make.

    Thanks, Sheree

    Ya'll, Ya'll, Ya'll
I'm drooling here!!!! I cant see the pictures! All I get are boxes with the red X in the middle. When I right- click on them it still does nothing to show the pictures. Then I went to The FAERIE FACTORY web site and it is temporarily a political thing for Obama. Not supporting the act of Killing Human babies is much more important to me than who the "Faeries" wanted me to vote for. Sorry to get so serious. I will get off of my stump now.
Can anyone help me to get to see Luvs pictures????

All I can see are red x's. Am I missing somethin?

    WAH!!!size=16>

I wanna see the pics, tooooo!!!

Arlene, can you please repost them?

I'm sorry folks - AOL did away with their photo site a few weeks ago and I had most of my photos stored there. But if you go to my flickr site, you can find a folder there titled fairy houses!!

    Thank you, Arlene!!

GOSH!! They are DARLING!! You have done so fantabulously. The care you've taken with making each one shows and I KNOW you will sell 'em like hotcakes! I hope you remember your camera when you have your table set up - would love to see the pics from the craft show. Keep us posted!!

Oh WOW! Arlene those are sooooo cute. I love them. I think I am going to try to make some of my own now. I also was looking at all your pictures of your garden. I have been on your iste many times before and never get bored. There are so many wonderful things to absorb. Thank you for sharing them all with us~~Micki~~

Deedlesmom, thanks for bumping this thread up. It sure is worth saving!

Arlene, I love-love-love your creations, and I mean all of them! You inspire me!

I love planting succulents & mosses too. It's easier to get creative with them because they aren't fussy about the container they're growing in, as long as it drains well. I'm always hunting little miniatures that will work in my succulent landscapes at yard sales.

You should be able to sell any of your creations easily. Who wouldn't love them? Best of luck, you should make lots of johnny cash :-)

..... oh and the fairy houses .... adorable! ~tenderlee

Thanks everyone. The show was in June. I only sold one fairy house there, but many, many fairy gardens, planted shoes and bottle bugs. I had over $900 in sales. I think I had the houses priced too high because I lowered them some and ended up selling almost every one at the local farmer's market this summer. Originally I had them priced between $20 and $40. I lowered prices to $15 - $30 and they flew off the tables. I do have photos from the show but I am on vac. right now and using a laptop, so can't post any until we get home! I had a blast making them and plan to do them again this winter and do 2 spring shows with them.

I sure wish I lived close to Ohio! I would have emptied you out. lol! I forgot how adorable your fairy houses were and love all the fairy planters too. Thanks to deedlesmom for bumping this up! And thanks Arlene for reposting the link to your totally awesome album! The grandbaby is getting so big! He is so adorable. I love the picture of him entitled "Bath time." What a treat!

    Hello Arlene,

I'm drooling here. I've been trying to find fairy houses for a couple of years now and finally ended up here.

    Your fairy homes are exquisite!!

Would you mind if I borrowed some of your ideas for personal use in my gardens?

    Have a peaceful weekend.

Ohhh, I can't see the pics, anyone know why? Please help, I so want to see.

    Hello Arlene,

Thank you for your kindness. I've looked at all your fairy houses to get ideas although I doubt mine will look as exquisite :). My camera just went on the fritz so I'll need to buy a new one when time allows. I'll try to post pics when I complete one.

    Most Gratefully

The pictures aren't showing up because AOL dumped it's photo hosting page. Another link was posted further into this message, but I'll post it again - it goes to my flickr photo site. There's a folder on the right hand side for fairy houses. Would love to see yours, Marie, when you get one done!

Thanks so much for the link. It'll take some time to look at all the fairy house/garden pics but the ones I just saw are lovely. Very much what I want to do in my washtub for my Grands. This will give me some ideas of what to watch for at yard sales and thrift stores as well as the plants to use.

This is why the internet is so useful - thanks again for posting!
