Run Lawn Boy with leaner oil to gas ratio??

Mower, 1992 Lawn-Boy S21ZSR

Always used Lawn Boy oil @ 32:1

First, the back story:

The lower seal started leaking again, and oil was sprayed across the deck. 3rd seal in the last 5 years.

1st time I just replaced the seal. 2nd time I checked the crankshaft (even though I never hit anything hard) replaced upper & lower bearings, + the seal. This time, I asked the repair counterman at the lawn, garden & feed supply store what gives?

He asked if the muffler was heavy with carbon. It was. The repair counterman said that the mufflers could get clogged and cause back pressure. Suggest I de-carbonize or replace the muffler & seal.

GET THIS! He also claims that the 32:1 mix is too rich. That Lawn-Boy was being far too conservative on their lubrication standard. He sez that you can run a modern 2-cycle oil in the Lawn-Boys at 40:1 and still provide sufficient lubrication, while keeping the carbon buildup down.

Question:

What say you all? My 2-cycle trimmer, blower, and chain saw all call out 40:1 With the new lubricants - may of which are synthetic, - can the ratio be pushed up for this 1992 Lawn Boy as well?

Thanks!

To answer you question I would say yes it could run a little leaner. With that said I personally would not do it. It has lasted since 92 and has served you well at 32:1. In the event you damage the engine as a result of a leaner mixture the game maybe over for it and it might not be worth fixing. I would run 32:1 and decarb every couple years. Better yet start adding Pri-G in all your mixed fuel and never have to decarb. This stuff is great and I have been running it in 2 cycle applications for over 10 years with great results including in my outboards.

    Hi-

Lawnboy oil at 32:1 is great, but it will carbon up faster. I use Amsoil Saber at 40:1 in EVERYTHING. I have run it at 50:1 in the past with great results. There is almost no carbon and no smoke. Modern lubricants are amazing. I just see no reason to run my equipment (or Lawnboys) at 32:1 with Lawnboy oil.

I agree with EVERYTHING the above poster said and that is a great rule of thumb (to run at what the lawnboy says). But keep in mind the lawnboy oil is a very old formulation, that is really not as high quality as say an echo or amsoil 2 cycle oil. These new oils can be run leaner because they are BETTER in every way. They might be more expensive, but are worth it in the end, as your machine will run better and not carbon up as much. I dont think I'll go back to LB oil at 32:1.

40:1 is fine with most new oils. I trust Amsoil and Opti-2 up to 64:1. Use good name brand oils and you should be fine. If it's a TC-W3 Dino oil, stick to 32:1.

Id rather clean a little carbon every 5 or 10 years than replace the engine.. IMHO

What ever happened to the old reliable "Half-pint of oil to a gallon of gasoline mixture?"
Yeah, we ran everything on it, and never had a failure of 2 cycle machines. Smoked a bit, but everything lasted a long time!
Guess you can figure out how old i am, from the preceding!

So, Lawn Boy oil is an old formulation. = 32:1

I have Echo Power Blend universal 2-stroke oil
    And
Poulan PRO Smokless Forumlation 2-stroke oil

As I understand it, Echo and Poulan represent NEW formulations and I may run them in the Lawn Boy at 40:1?

Thats what I do. When you mix it, you will see that 40:1 is really not that much less oil per gallon.

"Lawn Boy is junk get a real mower Honda"

Strange thing is I don't recall seeing very many 40, 30 or even 20 year old Honda engines let alone anyone wanting one.

Hondas are for sheep who only buy what Consumer Reports prints in their politicaly correct rag.

I have been running my Stihl chainsaw and what ever 2 stroke I have for 30 odd yrs on those little 6oz bottles from any where. Hardly buy the same brand twice. I add them to 2 gallons of gas. a rich 32:1. Never any fuel troubles. The Stihl specs 40:1 and other than a little smoke while running choked its OK. So far, no complaints from my 50: 1 Husqy weed wacker either. The new stuff is ashless, you gotta mix it purty strong to carbon up stuff.

I have never seen a 20 or 30 year old honda, they usually get junked the first time the blade clutch gives out. Ever try to get parts for a honda? I'll take my chances with a c-series lawnboy over any honda mower.

OP, I have run amsoil synthetic for the past 15 years. Great results at even leaner mixtures than have been spoken here.
