Cultivator/Insulator Tool Holder & Horseshoe Birdhouses

DH & I finished up these projects today for Farmer's Market. The bdhses are old barnwood (left natural) & some smaller size horseshoes I got cheap at a TS! Then I dug into my DH & my stash & found some old hinges:

And my friend gave me some junk...this cultivator...so I used an old barnboard & some ceramic insulators we saved out of a dilapated barn...so it's a "tool hanger."

Here's another shot of them together:

The hinges provide a place for wire to be attached for hanging (if desired). Inspiration for the Horsehoe/hinge bdhses came from here...our GJer friends, Carol & Kirk (I think).

Am in the mental process of designing a "duplex" horsehoe one (for myself) with 2 large horseshoes I got on JT from purplemoon! Jeanne S.

How wonderful to recycle the old barn wood and hinges into homes for the birds. They are just adorable. I think the fancy ones are nice but for some reason the birds don't usually care for them. One thing though would really be helpful if you want them to be bird homes. Birds need to have a landing perch below the hole to land and get set to hop into the house. Just a short 3" piece of dowel will work beautifully.

    Jeanne,

Those are awesome! Love the cultivator as hooks! Love the horsie shoes and hinges. It's so incredible to use old stuff to make new. I guess I learned that from my Grandparents.

Cute birdhouses and I love your cultivator tool hanger. How clever to use the insulators also. This is to cute for a shop. I think it would be a neat coat rack for the house or if someone had the right bathroom it would be darling to hang hair accessories on the cultivator and then towels on the insulators.

I was in a clients home this week who has cabinets made out of old barn boards and they are beautiful. They use to run a Bed and Breakfast in their home but had some health issues and have put it up for sale. I could see this working for them in their home no problem.

Thanks so much for sharing. Punk

Those as so cute. I was at a garage sale yeaterday and they had taken a slab of wood from a tree and used horse shoe for the mouth and insulators for the eyes can't remember what for the nose. It was eye catching. Wished I'd taken a pic! Good job and all your things.

I love the tool hanger, what a great way to use the cultivator. And the birdhouses will make 3 bird families very happy! I like the hinge idea on the roof....Hmmmm

I love the natural red of the birdhouses along with the old horseshoes and hinges. Great idea to use the hinges for a hanger. They are sturdy as well as decorative.

Having made gourd birdhouses, I learned that birds don't need perches outside the hole. I can't remember where I read it. They seem to be able to zero in on the hole and stand on its edge. Or with the texture of the barnwood, they could probably hang onto the side of the wood.

And I love the cultivator hanger! I'd use it for a coat rack if the hooks in the cultivator weren't too sharp!

I really need to make my way towards Iowa and that farmers market! he-he

Thanks, Gjers, for your replies...had fun making these & sold 1 of bdhses today.

Pros & cons about adding perches.
..these are wren houses...so we usually don't add a perch per experience & research on Internet & books as:

"Do not add or buy any birdhouse with a perch. The birds don't need it, whereas house sparrows and other less desireable birds will have easy access if perches are used."

Sometimes we add them & larger birds make the entry hole larger...we like "sparrows" too!

I do like the cultivator alot...so I can sure make use of it if it doesn't sell...like your ideas & comments.

You are SO creative Jeanne! I always LOVE your projects! What a great use for the old cultivator and insulators! And the birdhouses are wonderful!

My Grandma always told me to hang your horseshoes with the points aiming up... when they are face down like the center one their luck runs out.

That being said, I love them and usually I don't care for rustic items. But these remind me of the old barn we had when I was a kid. great job!

Ditto what everyone said. All your work is FABULOUS!!!

We have little wrens, too. Do you think the 'no perch' would work for Aussie wrens? I would love to attract more to my garden.

Very naturally beautiful bird houses Jeanne! I have recently read that perches are considered an accessory for preditors to intrude on the nest. This has become the rule to help purple martins to survive the attacks of sparrows and starlings. The birds have adequate claws especially on natural wood to inter the bird house without a perch. Love your work!

Your work is picture perfect.I usually like sparkly things, garden or otherwise, but that is one thing GJ has taught me, to appreciate other people's taste and ideas.
