Larger Master Bathroom or Larger Master Closet?

If you had to choose between a larger master bathroom and a larger closet, which one would you choose?

Our master bedroom was added on by the previous owner and it has the worst of both worlds. A small master bathroom with a pedestal sink and no storage and a decent size closet, though not a walk-in, so its accessibility is not great. Things get pushed back on the sides into never-never land.

We've thought of taking some of the bedroom space to help one of these problems, but the bedroom really isn't big enough to give up too much space and solve both.

Which would you go for if you could only have one?

Photos are always helpful, along with floor plans. I don't mind a small master bath as long as it is in keeping with the style and scale of the house.

I would always go with a larger master bathroom, but if you really need a nice master closet for the storage, at least update the master bathroom to include luxurious finishes and accessories to help distract from the small size!

Add to the bath imho! Long closets with great doors that open into the bedroom take up no extra space. By extra, I mean the space necessary to walk around inside a walk in closet!

If you have another bathroom, I say trick out the one you have with wonderful fixtures and make it as easy to use and clean as you can, and add to the closet.I have seen closets that I would have sacrificed my entire home for - ha ha - with one of those beautiful rooms just give me a bathroom, a microwave and a computer and I don't need anything else.

I may need to take a photo of the bathroom. It's crazy small.

The other thing we are thinking about is an eventual add on for a new master suite on a second story. In that case, this bedroom will go to one of the kids, so luxury is less of a concern. Actually, small might mean harder get away with messy. ;)

Bathroom for sure. I have a huge walk-in closet right next door to a woefully small master bath. I dream about busting through one day so I can have a tub and double sinks. A large master bath is the key to a happy marriage I think!

It could depend on size and the orientation of the room. If the closet and bathroom are right next to each other you could cut out a piece of the closet and put an alcove for the shower or toilet. It's ultimately a decision based on personal preference and priorities.

That depends on if you can afford to put a designer bathtub in the bathroom. If you don't use/want a tub, then try for the best of both, redo the bathroom with a more convenient sink and counter, and either expand the closet, or put french doors on the existing closet to allow it to open more. A floor plan of the existing layout would be helpful.

I have a smallish master bath (shower only) and a big walk in next to it. My dream is to get rid of 1/2 of that closet and add to a freestanding bathtub. The bathroom is more important!!
