New Privacy Fence, Advice please!

Hi,

This looks like the forum I need- experts!:D

As I had to tear out lots of big bushes to make way for the 8 foot privacy fence, I need ideas of a FEW things to hang on the fence. Not much just a couple of big accents.I will get busy planting again, but this area needs something eyecatching. I could do the big iron sun with rays, but not too imaginative. Help me!!

Thank you,

Pat

I attached a large rustic shelf on mine. I can decorate it for the seasons & change it regularly. It's something not everyone has. I saw one like it on someone elses fence at a garden show & thought it was really cool.

ladypat ... I don't have a privacy fence (although I think they are wonderful for gardening ideas on the fence & flower beds!)...so I do some decorating with barn doors. I love grapevine wreaths & also celestial things...so here's a couple ideas! Whatever you do, have fun & please share! Love pics! Jeanne S.

You could also try iron grillwork or put a step ladder in front of the fence and put smaller decorative things there. The sun, moon, stars theme is great also or old metal wheels--like the kind you find on tractors, hay rakes, etc. depending on where you live.

Hmmmm...a lot depends upon your taste. Empress of Dirt (not sure what her nick is here at GJ) likes to put up mirrors which I think is an interesting choice. It can reflect the garden and add more flower power to the space. On one TV show I watched on landscaping, they created a privacy wall at the end of a deck and set up a faux fireplace. They found a metal grate and put it as the fire box then put up a faux mantel around it. Above it they hung an old stained glass window. Looked very cool. The homeowner was able to change the decor on the mantel as she pleased.

Jeannespines....that cactus is beautiful...I didn't know they bloomed like that...

    Maybe it's because I live in Iowa...lol

And I love the shelf idea...I saw the pictures of the before and after...very nice.

Yes, I like these ideas. And I do like the moon and sun and stars idea. I had thought of a huge grapevine wreath, and change additions with the seasons. Keep thinking for me. Thank you all. Pat

We had a 6ft old but nice cypress gothic fence about 65 foot long which got torn up & laid down when Ike hit , broke several pieces of the pattern .We searched but could find no business which sold this pattern in that height .Sound 2 finally but they wouldnt sale us a few boards to repair it had to buy sections .
So we ended up erecting a new 6 foot dog eared wood fence ourself . Money was tight afterward so I went to thrift stores , looked around in house wares , garden wares & xmas section . found used vine wreaths , plastic flowers & birds etc & fake vines for decorating them .Found several plastic plaques with theme of flowers on them & several kitchen plaques with different herbs pictured in natural growing form . I also located ceramic plaques with angels in christmas section and several novelty bird houses too ! Think I spent around $60 but got tons of items .Hung all of them up along fence to create a show case .
Plan on planting herbs under herb plaques ,flowers under the flower plaques.Under the wreaths & birdhouses we hung up I will plant real vines to grow up and around bird houses .Around the angel plaques I am putting in seedlings from my salvias which have self sown everywhere plus i got a old head / footboard on my way home of a twin bed in white free it was being tossed by someone .I will use the head / foot board combination to make either a small planter bed out of it or a bench .
Oh , we took the pieces of old cypress gothic fence, cut them in half saving 3 foot of upper portion of fence sections . We plan on installing these smaller sections of gothic fencing around trees to make mini flower bed borders to keep our dogs out of the beds .I have several used hinges to make gates as acess to these areas .The lower bottom portion of the cut fencing was going to be thrown away but thrifty me decided to save it for future bird houses. I forsee everyone on my xmas list getting a bird house .

Sometimes I see faux fountain looking things on a wall, you could plant annuals in the basin. Maybe get some old garden tools & paint handles pretty colors & attach to wood fence. You get snow there so can't get too crazy with plaster type stuff or might crack. Gsditop you sure turned a bad event into a lovely thing!! Smart to use leftover wall also. Imagine what you would have to pay to go buy the fencing around the trees yikes!!And birdhouses with the rest!! Way to go!! Jan
