Care for Paph (Winston Churchill cross)

Hi all,

I recently purchased one of these bulldog paphs (in bloom) at an orchid show. I am mostly a cat head, but somehow this one followed me home! Tag says Paph Beute "Linda" x(Venture Sunset x Winston Churchill) "Roseville".

Can anyone give me some cultural tips for this bulldog type?

Does this type need high light? I grow indoors (Pac NW) with the newer type of flourescent light fixture (8 lights) from Charley's Greenhouse.

Thank you ahead of time!

    Hello, gesjenn,

My Winston Churchill cross rebloomed in the following conditions, as did another bulldog. These are primarily bright Phal conditions, except the 58F winter minimum was a bit cool.

    Winter:
    - E/SE light, unobstructed, supplemented by
    - two, 4' T8 fluorescent tubes on 16 hours/day
    - moderate air movement
    - 58-80F, winter temp range.
    - 20%-55%, winter RH range

    Summer outside:
    - E/SE light, cut 50%
    - S. MN summer temps - high 50s-100s. The Paphs probably would have done better had I brought them inside when temps hit 85.
    - RH - all over the place, tending toward high

I kept overhead rain off the orchids unless they needed the water anyway.

Please factor in that I had two bulldogs for 2+ years, so these conditions might not have been favorable, long-term. Hope this is helpful.

Paphs are one of my favs and have had the most success with them out of anythig. I find they like a bit of neglect come fall time. Nothing extream just a like water withheld and a little cool down. They seem to be able to take all the light an I door grower Using florecent can give them. I would also say to keep them root bound but, if it seems to stall in growth repot maybe evenback into the same pot they seem to take off a little after a repot at least for me they do.

Sorry for typos I am writhing this on my itouch and I am still getting use to it.

I have not grown any bulldog types so I can. Of Speak specifcally but i hope this helps.

Gesjenn, If you are a cat head with flowers, just give your new orchid the same conditions but with slightly lower light.

That name has some problems. Does it really say that (exactly) on the tag?

Your location (PNW), your location (indoors) and the mid-winter season all ensure that the light bank will be the primary illumination for months to come. The good news is an 8-tube bank is better than adequate. Run-time should be at least what keeps the plants healthy (~12hr) up to possibly 16hr especially if there are Catts too that also need light. Since tubes are hardly too much light for the catts it is difficult to recommend giving less to the paph, I would just throw them all in under the same light. It won't be the same everywhere under the tubes anyway, closer to the center will be brighter and it will dim towards the ends. You can move plants around so no one plant sits forever under the tube ends (catts) or not but when a large group of identical plants are grown under tubes and are not moved around it is clear after time that those in the center grow faster and better than those at the ends.

    Hi everyone,
Thanks so much for the info!
aurthurm, I wondered about the name. I did a google search and found a different version. I dont know if it is Venture or Ventura, and I'm not quite sure of the real name. Do you know?

Scratched around for a bit and...
Paph Beute "Linda" x(Venture Sunset x Winston Churchill) "Roseville"

    Is, perhaps

Paph. Beaute 'Linda' x (Venture 'Sunset' x Winston Churchill) 'Roseville'
Where the last e in Beaute has an accent mark.

Google is good but full of errors, you can check name on the link below, but be wary of punctuation. So if you just enter Paphiopedilum and Beaut you will find the name
