What is the scientific name of this tree?

14 years ago

Hi,

Can someone tell me what the scientific name is of the tree given by the "Here is a link that might be useful" of this message?

I think it is some type of "laurel" (common name) but I would like to know the exact scientific name if possible.

The closest I could get was the list below which I gathered by searching for "laurel" at http://plants.usda.gov/java/nameSearch (I searched for laurel because that is what I think it is, but I want to know what the exact species is):

Kalmia latifolia L. ==> http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=KALA

Prunus lusitanica L. - Portugal laurel ==> http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=PRLU

Umbellularia californica (Hook. & Arn.) Nutt.

California laurel ==> http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=UMCA

Umbellularia californica (Hook. & Arn.) Nutt. var. californica

California laurel ==>

http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=UMCAC

This plant does propagate all by itself, apparently by seed, as I have new plants of this type sprouting up around my property. The berries it has shown in my "Here is a link that might be useful" link are green right now, but they turn dark black over time.

Thanks,

bgoodr
