Mortimer Sackler is an interesting but somewhat different type of Austin, at least in my experience. An upright grower, it may aspire to be a climber, but I try to keep mine cut back to about 5-6 ft tall. It has a more overall "delicate" appearance and the blooms aren't real large, but they are nicely formed. Unfortunately, it is "delicate" enough that it doesn't really like hot afternoon sun--which is all I can provide it--so the blooms tend to bleach and wilt rather quickly in mid-summer. On the other hand, it is quite disease resistant. Sorry, but I just don't remember whether it has fragrance. I like Mortimer very much, but it is not a love affair between us.

Thanks Kate! Lovely photo. As per your advice, I have a perfect spot for this rose. I figured for $5, how could I go wrong? I have a large front yard and a bunch of board fencing - it will go in a more shaded area [although it does get morning sun] and it can be free to ramble or get tall next to the fence.

Marinette is a charming single that should be (but for some reason isn't) redefining the size of blooms of the single persuasion. The colors of the petals are lovely blended pink going into pale yellow. I'm not sure it looks 'right' in a bed of heavily petaled roses, but it is definitely a keeper.

Do you have a good Pilgrim or a bad Pilgrim? I had bad ones from Park Wayside...they didn't bloom at all the first year but they did grow, years 2 and 3 were good, then they went into RMV decline. Reports of better plants have appeared here recently, but I worry that the old heavily RMV-infected budwood might be used by some propagators. If yours blooms this year, it would be a very good thing.

I was really surprised to find Marinette as Austin has kind of kicked this one to the curb, but I have found that some of the ones he doesnt like [maybe because they are not his newest ones] are actually good roses. Example is Cressida which I adore. So glad to hear this is a pretty roseI will either put it in my old garden bed or along a long board fence where it can be admired. I liked the photos on helpmefind. I have no idea if I have a good or bad Pilgrim - guess time will tell......Thanks for your comments!

I grow Mortimer in a somewhat shady spot, and love this rose. It has a lovely fragrance and bloom.

It forms a graceful shrub, resembles a Noisette.
