When should I sow perennial seeds and which method is best?

Greetings everyone,

I tried again this spring to grow some vegetables and flowers from seed, and I failed miserably. And as any avid gardener knows, failure will not deter us.

I just purchased some perennial seeds (black eyed susans, coneflowers, blanket flowers, red hot pokers, prarie sunflowers, etc.) and I want to know how possible (and feasible) is it to direct sow them in the ground? Or do I want to grow them in peat pots/flats and then transplant?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have 40 square foot border with a butterfly bush that needs some company. I also intend to mulch the bed as I have recently ammended it and want the soil to settle naturally before adding the mulch. This was good as we have had considerable rain to help in the process.

Thanks everyone!
