start digging.. remove them .. and replace them with size appropriate plants ...

here's your chance to reshape the front of your house... make a real statement... don't try to skimp by trying to restore an ugly plant .... you may spend 5 years trying to accomplish something.. only to eventually fail ... conifers do not take well to harsh trimming.. IMHO ...

Squares are not an improvement on cones. And unless the front of the house is perfectly symmetrical matching pairs of identical shrubs don't go with the style of it anyway. Try something like three different kinds of shrubs instead, a small and a medium on the left and a large ("large" within the context of the space, maybe in this case only 2-3 ft. tall) on the right. Balanced, but not formally.
