Two in RI building HFGH 8x10 and 6x8!

Hi everyone. I am going to be starting to build the new 8x10 HFGH soon- hopefuly this weekend. My new friend, mrs_v has already started her 6x8 HFGH.

Last week I started a thread about my questions and how I was nervous about building this new greenhouse. Several people responded and helped me out- thanks!

Now, with that in mind, I am starting this thread so mrs_v and myself can help each other along the way- and therefore help others who may be buying the HFGH.

It would also be great if those of you have built a HFGH could chime in with tips, pointers, etc. I spent last week reading through all the posts, and I *think* I am ready to start!

My HFGH should be arriving this week...

    Hello brumor,

I'm pleased to report that the 2x10 foundation is in and the frame is up. All parts were accounted for. The roof panels & door have been installed. (No white panels with this kit.)

The best advice I can give you at this time with regard to your foundation is... DO NOT go by the dimensions on the box or in the instructions. DO measure the pieces that will be attached to the foundation for a proper fit.

I'll be checking back and keeping you posted.

Well, that was fast! I have my son digging yesterday and today for my footings. I am sinking 4x4s at each corner and then attaching the frame to the 2x10s. I still do not have the kit yet- I am hoping for this weekend.

So it seems to be going smoothly for you? How does it look?

Yes, it was quick. Much faster than I anticipated. In fact, I'm the one holding up progress. It's taking me awhile to apply the aluminum tape and weather stripping.

It looks fine. This weekend we'll give it a closer inspection and identify any weak areas that may need reinforcing. The vent window is a problem.

There doesn't seem to be much space overhead, so we won't be raising the floor much. Given your height, you may want to take that into consideration and possibly make adjustments beforehand.

    Good luck!

i second the part about waiting for the kit to arrive so you will know exactly what size it is. my 10x12 was more like 9.5x11.5.

also just incase you might of missed it, use screws to attach the panels. those little clips will not hold, no matter how many you put on.

Hello there,!! MY 10x12 is going up as soon as the SNOW melts. SHould be another week or two. Ours came without instructions, of course.

BUSY1, I am glad you wrote that about the clips, cuz a friend of mine told me to make sure and order extra clips. I guess it would be easier to use screws.

flowersnhens, you can download and print out the 10x12 manual from the Harbor Freight website here. You're gonna need it. ;-)

Also, here's a link to my blog about building the 10x12. Most folks here strongly recommend extra clips on the panels, and screws to secure the panels to the frame, both! Hope this helps.

I just got word that my GH is in Chicago. They are hoping they can deliver it Friday- but most likely it will be next week. My son is still digging- ran into a HUGE rock...

So...I should have it this afternoon! My holes are dug, and I am ready. I wish someone else here had built the 8x10...but I guess I will have to lead the way. I'll start a new thread with pictures this weekend.

Hi again,,,well, We decided to buy a different greenhouse instead of messing with the hfgh,,,I decided it was not going to be big enough. We purchased a 17 x 32 gothic style greenhouse from Griffins. I have had 2 of their models in the past when I had a greenhouse business. I had the 17x48, 2 of them. I don't need one that big, so I went with the smaller one this time. I am going to sell plants on the weekends. I have thousands of seeds started right now in the basement under growlights.

Nice to hear from you greenrhody! I'm in the northwest part of the state also.

Our 6x8 is still under construction and waiting for extra clips ordered through HF. I had concerns about caulking every panel and really like your idea about leaving one panel for extra ventilation.

Do you use yours in the winter?

Now, if only the weather would cooperate.

    Thanks!

Hey guys! I have another thread about building the 8x10 (with photos). I am going to troll another thread about my sticky doors. I am a little concerned...

    Hi mrs_v

Don't usually get the gh started until march, I insulated the north wall+ as per recommendations from this forum.
Based on electricity costs from last year(oil filled heater) it seems very economical to heat, so I have been tempted to use it in winter.
I'd say extra ventilation is almost more paramount than heating, these little guys can get very hot, and mine came with 2 roof windows. If you like I can email you some pics.
