Costco Greenhouse on sale

For those who are looking for a nice, smaller GH, I noticed that Costco has a 6'X8' aluminum GH on sale for $699, including shipping. That price is $150 off of regular, and is good until April 5, 2009. I think it's a Rion brand, based on the phone number provided in the Costco ad.

The GH is powder-coated aluminum (black), has a twinwall roof and single wall sidewalls, and a number of other features. There is also a lifetime warranty on the frame, and 20 years on the sidewalls. I'm not personally familiar with this GH (nor do I work for Costco), but it looked like a decent deal that I thought I'd pass on. If anyone has experience with this model, it would be helpful to know what you think of this GH.

That's more than twice the price of the aluminum frame double wall 6X8' HFGHs. I wonder why there's such a large price difference.

Part of the explanation could be the powder-coated frame, the fact that it's a little taller, and the length of the warranty compared to the HFGH. While the HFGH is a lot of greenhouse for the money, reading this forum also shows it has a lot of quality and fit problems. Whether this Costco one is better in that regard, I don't know.

Yes, i agree. Our company has recently changed ownership and advertising has been the #1 focus. It is hard to decipher between all the sizes of which ones to promote. Too big scares people away and with too small there is not enough interest. Thank you for the comment.

seabird66 Yours is GREAT! What a wonderful work environment. You must be extremely productive! :-) That is awesome. We (my sweetie) still needs to make shelves for in front of the windows. He did make me (1) three tier unit, per my instructions, but once done, I didn't like it. It was similar to the base's. The bases I like, but the 2 shelves above them will now have a 2" face board instead of a 4" face board. It was way too bulky and eye intrusive. Totally distracted our view. Now, he is going to construct a 2" face board with a 4" wide depth board, that will be routed out to hold securely the metal shelving that will rest within. Of course there will be additional strength supports that will be hidden. So as to not have any warping or shifting as well as provide stability, I am a somewhat of an "Aesthetic OCD" kind of person. Therefore the 2 bases and 1 bench. What I am looking for is 2 shelves on top of the bases, that can be removed when not needed. AND, something that is not going to produce too many permanent holes in the white washed pine walls. After tons of researching, I think I have found the solution. He is going to work on it this winter. This she shed / greenhouse is mostly 3 season. I had water run to the structure, and there is heat, but the water gets turned off in the winter. This is my very first winter with it. Who knows, maybe next summer I will have the water run to it PERMANENTLY Happy Growing Kathy :-)

I agree the tub is probably beige not brown? And it looks uglier and browner than it really is because it's surrounded by darker brown tile and pink tile. Beige, brown and pink? Blech, that's terrible combination for anything but Neopolitan ice cream. Beige on its own its an inoffensive color. And beige sometimes looks better than white in a dark windowless room where white can look dingy. This is a small room with limited possible layouts. And if it's a secondary bathroom it's not necessarily the place to go all out. So for all these reasons I think it might be all right to do a "good enough" renovation and save your funds and efforts for the master bathroom. I think it might look nice to keep the beige tub and do beige tile on the walls. Maybe beige subway tile for a more modern look than 4x 4 tiles. Beige hex tiles for the floor, or black for a more contemporary look. Then maybe keep a monochromatic color scheme and paint the walls off white. Or paint the walls a soft blue like Benjamin Moore Palladian blue. Light blue and beige is a classic combination. With the new vanity you already have and new faucets and some nice lights and a new shower curtain it could be a pretty room without blowing your budget. beige subway tile: beige and pale blue bathroom: beige hex floor tiles:

The company I work for also has a website and sells outside of Houzz, so maybe see if you can find out more information about the seller and see if they have reviews. Ok, I just realized it is being sold by Houzz, so I'm not really helpful. The only thing that gives me pause is that it's not returnable. So if it arrives damaged, then what?

Harbor Freight stuff is all made in China. That might explain the other part.

I am giving this greenhouse serious thought, and I would like advice or comments from those with more experience and knowledge than me (which means basically from anyone).

I haven't exactly researched this, but I have casually looked at small greenhouses for years now. Actually, for decades.

I realize the standard advice is to get a bigger one because that is what you will want later, but for several reasons, I think this size is good for me.

One question, and I realize this is a bit insane, is that I may have to move in a few years because my house might be condemned and demolished to make way for a transportation project. That means I might want to pick up and move the greenhouse. Do you think that it would be at all feasible to, say, have a person at each corner, lift it onto a large piece of plywood, and then lift the plywood onto a flat bed truck?

Second question is about vents. It looks like it has one roof vent. Is that sufficient? Can you add another roof or gable vent to this type of greenhouse?

I would be putting it on an existing asphalt surface. Other than making sure it is level, would there be any concerns with that?

The price is very attractive. Do you think this is a good deal or a buyer beware situation?

My thoughts:
1) I don't know how much it weighs, but, regardless, lifting it from the 4 corners could easily wrack the frame and/or cause joints to break or pop apart, and the panels to pop out. Personally, I wouldn't risk it. Instead, I'd grit my teeth and spend the time needed to (at least partially) disassemble it, and then reassemble it at the new location.

2) For a greenhouse this size, that one, good-size vent window is probably adequate, but many of us use a fan to move the air around anyway. I suppose you could add another window as I suspect the manufacturer (Rion) would probably sell you the parts, but that could be a little pricey.

3) Possible concerns about having it on asphalt could be: the smell on a really hot day inside the greenhouse, and no drainage from spills. It's also usually a good idea to tether down a gtrrnhouse foundation some way in case of a violent windstorm, so you might want to figure out how to secure the base to the asphalt.

4) As far as buyer beware, I suspect you don't have to worry, given that Costco has a generous return policy, even on things like this. As I mentioned in my first post, I'm not associated with Costco, but I am a satisfied customer. I bought a different model greenhouse from them 3 years ago and have been very happy with it...and the price was about 1/2 of what I'd seen for the same model elsewhere.

Thanks for your thoughts, kudzu. I am still mulling things over and my more sensible side is winning at the moment. As much as I would love to buy a greenhouse this week, it would make a lot more sense to wait until I know if I will have to move.

My coldframe collasped recently, so I will have to replace it this spring if I don't get the gh, but I know I can pick that up and move it no problem.

I have a very similar greenhouse that I got last year from Costco. I LOVE IT. I started a ton of seedlings in Jan. I moved in a radiant heater to keep it above freezing on the cold nights. It normally stays around 5-6 degrees warmer than the outside at night time. And maybe even a little warmer with all the plants inside (I have probably 150+ plants inside right now.) I love it so much I wish I had two of them. I spend hours inside of it each day. It did however take two days to assemble. Putting in the panels was sort of tough. But once it was assembled on the level area of ground I dug 7" deep, I staked in the greenhouse then filled the inside and a 1 foot wide space around the perimeter with a 6" deep of pea gravel. I doubt it will ever blow away.
