if it's fairly fresh stuff it'll be wetter and heavy - 2 yards could be ok if it's not really wet, but watch as they dump it on [if they're loading for you with a front end loader] and be ready to call a halt if the tail sits too far down - makes it real touchy to steer!

Been there done that. Start with half a bed and see how it feels. I have filled my truck before and it was too much. Front end squirrely and the rear axle hitting the bump-stops over every small bump. I got home and calulated the volume of a five gallon bucket and then filled it with compost and weighed the bucket. Did some math and figured out I was over a ton with the bed full. I think the capacity of my 2000 F150 is about 1850 lbs or something similar. The risks (tires, axle bearings, accidents, etc) are not worth the savings (time and gas). I feel comfortable with 2/3 of a bed with the compost I was hauling. Really it was half-composted mulch.

I agree--be very careful. The moisture level will make a lot of difference as thoroughly saturated compost will weigh much more than dry compost. I would get one yard and make two trips, or rent/borrow a trailer. Years ago I ruined the axle on a 4X4 1/2 ton Chevy hauling 50 40lb. bags of topsoil for my grandparents. It didn't help that the truck was old & worn out to begin with. I've been scared ever since to overload a pickup bed.

I drove 375 miles with 1 yard of compost a while back in my 2004 1/2 ton Chevy. I seem to recall it was fairly moist. No problems whatsoever on that trip.

Thanks, that was just the kind of "been there done that" advice I was looking for. I'll make two trips or maybe get my son to breakin his new/used truck and take one yard with his truck. Thanks again for your responses.
