Repaired John Deere LA130 at Lowes for Sale

I was planning on using my Lowes 10% coupon at Home Depot on a Cub Cadet, but apparently Cub Cadet has the same "price fixing" policy as John Deere, so that's not going to happen. I decided to stop into Lowes to see their JD selection and noticed a repaired LA130 sitting out front with the new ones. It was marked down from $1999 to $1799. The salesman said he could come down to $1699. I figure now I can step up to a better tractor for what I was planning on spending for a new one. I've purchased the tractor, but it is not scheduled to be delivered until next week.

I was told that it is this years model. The tractor appears to be in new condition as it only seems to have some clippings around the bottom. I was able to find out that the repair was to fix a problem with the belt falling off. My concern now is that it doesn't have the mulching plug, which is standard. When I asked about getting that I was told that it is being sold "as is". I'm still under the assumption that it will have the full factory warranty. I'm going to call the Deere dealer who fixed the tractor to clarify this.

Am I getting enough of a discount to justify buying a "repaired" unit with the "as is" terms? I figure if I buy a new one, after one use, you wouldn't know the difference.

In a worst cse scenario the dealer will be able to order you a mulching plug for a few $ and you will have still saved a lot of money.

You may end up with a unit like one my friend is returning.

He ordered a new ZTR from Sears and had it delivered on Saturday.

They drove it off the trailer, showed him how it works, told him it was all set up but needed gas because they don't put much in new units and parked it in his garage.

Sunday morning he got it out to cut some grass and become more familiar with it. After a few minutes running, he started to hear some noises from the engine and an unusual smell, so he shut it off to check it out.

Pulled the dipstick and !VIOLA!------NO OIL IN THE CRANKCASE!

Now you know he is going to want a new replacement.

What do you suppose they will do with the machine they take back from him?

By the way, this is a franchised Sears store with an independent owner in a small town, not a corporate owned one.

Do not buy "Repaired" machines with an "as is" sign on them from dealers unless the price is low enough to cover the cost of a new engine.

I would try to contact the original owner to see if they have the plug,and why they returned the unit....Usually AS IS,means,what you see is what you get.If it blows up a week later,tough.I would not assume the John Deere warranty goes with the unit,and if so,How much of it remains. J M H O BTDT tbk

I just got off the phone with the John Deere dealer who did the repairs. I was told that if the original purchaser submitted the warranty, then the warranty starts from the original date. I don't have the paperwork with me, but he said that he could look it up in their system. They will also be able to confirm with me what the repair was.

If it's only been a couple of months, and the repair was just for the belt, I'm not going to be concerned about the tractor being a lemon.

The mulch plug does come standard on that model. I know it doesn't cost that much, but I'm going to see if I can get Lowes to replace it.
