Resin, you are so quick! I actually knew both of those too. I just recently learned to id the hazelnut, that little maroon flower (is it a flower?) is so distinctive.

I have the alder naturally on my property. I like to use the spent cones (are they cones?) as decorations in terrariums.

Pretty! The Red Maples are already showing here. I hope winter comes back soon though b/c I don't want to get a nasty surprise freeze way into April like we did last year. Our plants have been through enough in the past year!

A few days ago, for the first time, I saw naturally occuring Filbert along a local dirt road. I'd first spotted its catkins on the 11th and just assumed they were Alders. On a second pass by, a few days ago, I got to thinking the catkins were just too long for an Alder. Upon a closer look I spied what I now know(reading in the Dirr manual) to be the female parts, i.e. the tiny red flower. Thats what confirmed the ID for me. Great pictures btw, Conifer!

Conifer I hope you don't mind, I thought I'd share a picture of one of the Corylus I saw on that dirt road. There were quite a lot of them peppered on both sides of the road. Taken on the 26th. Pretty neat!

What, I assume, were black alder were totally covered with these trailing, reddish catkins. Have lived here for over 40 years and driven past them and only noticed them yesterday, by the bridge. I think they were valued by the indians for basket making.
I have one european hazelnut in the woods here, but, of course, I never get the nuts, if it bears. The squirrels are there and are soon to be grazing on the red maple flowers, also.
