Comments (11)Cover the nook with plywood and then get some thin sliced stone. Put stone around and above fireplace from floor to ceiling (on sides put it just inside light switch). You can use a contemporary or rustic stone depending on look you want. Then put up shelving on both sides....See Moredesert rose problems after using Garden Safe spray, HELP!?

Comments (16)That could also be cedar with a wood stain. We had a wall of it in an old home. If you order wood, you can ask for "clear" wood. This means that boards are selected with the fewest amount of visible knots in it. Boards are created by slicing the tree into vertical layers, or thicknesses. The knots are where the branches were. If a wood is described in a lumber yard as "knotty" then those are the boards with more knots. Some people like more knots, and some don't. Knots can dry-out and crack over time, fall-out, and leave holes. They can also leach sap. They are often filled with a wood filler to even-out the wood surface when paneling such as yours is put-up. The people that put-up that paneling chose to leave a more natural wood. Wood paneling like this was popular because it was real wood, and was not like the fake-wood paneling you would see all over....See MoreBlack specks eating roses
