This was a "green" recycled plastic product. We used different manufacturers to check which performed best, but the end result was equal: neither was ideal.

This type of product has a lot of thermal expansion/contraction, so when it gets hot it tends to pop out of the ground - even if staked regularly. It can also pull the stakes.

Short lengths and tighter radii tend to work better. Another type of staking system, where the product could slide through a retaining clip, might also work. As is, the material is screwed into the stakes so it can't expand and contract along its length except at the end lap joints.

So, at this point we would use an aluminum edging product or redwood bender board for this application.

It's better to order aluminum edging already colored. It's typically limited to earth tones, however - not wild artist's colors.

Presumably if you wanted cobalt blue or tractor green edging you could prime it and paint it, let it dry (or bake it) and then install it, hoping that the installation process would not damage the paint.

Some metal paints really need to be sprayed on, so it would probably be best to stick to factory applied colors and keep things simpler.
