Are they hardy in z5B? I never saw any when I lived in z5 but they're everywhere here in NoVA.

It's a very common tree in z5 Michigan.

Notoriously difficult to transplant.

sassafras tend to sulk the first year they are planted keep them watered on a regular basis and your sass should come back with full force next year - the tend to like sandy light soils
