$400 cu yard cow poop

Well that's what campers are paying near Ft Worth Tx. Don't believe this will make your maters grow taller but it might be an interesting break from analizing neutrent value of cow manure. Two gals in Hasslet Tx are picking up dry cow pattys and selling them in what looks to be about 1/2 cu ft bag for $7.50 each. Burning the chips is said to repel mosquitos equal to or better than citernillo and pinon. Boosting sales is the fact west nile virus is of great concurn in the area. So there you have it folks, good old fashion american ingenuity, enterprise and recycling in one neat package. Sure hope it doesn't become the rage and drive up prices on our #1 go to compost material.

A cow produces 80lbs of poop a day...much more if it's a dairy cow...there's about 11-16 million cows at any given point in Texas, alone.

I think they'll be okay with supply as long as someone wants to haul, spread, and/or process it.

Now, that, is some expensive chit.

There's a local organic soils/mulch company around Houston, well actually their trademark is "Beyond Organic", that produces, distributes and sells Handcrafted Vegan Compost . They package it in several sizes, one of which is the garden-mini at 4 qts - find it in many of the area lawn and garden shops an local hardware stores, nice little zip top bag. At $7.99 per mini I come up with a value of about $1,600/yard. If you step up to the 1-cubic foot bag I guess it's a bargain at ~$270/yard. Bulk from their yard is downright cheap at $49/yard.

All this time I never appreciated the value of the stuff I make out back. Even better, I'm starting to look at the 8 sq. miles of cattle pasture I sit aside with new appreciation.

Don't want to imagine what that smells like!

I pay $26 to $30 yd when preparing new ground for other people. My source is North Texas Municipal Water District which produces many tons daily from feed lot waste, residential yard waste and commerical disposal of plant material. If I were more confident of thier quility control,I might get more material for personal use from there and put additional time into worms and my other hobbys. $49 sounds reasonable for high quility material.
I am looking foward to wherther those gals are succesful with the dry chips. I sure hope so.

Cow poop patties are almost worthless, (unless they are fairly fresh). May be a soil conditioner but there isn't much nutrients in it. Sun and rain drain the nutrients(especially Nitrogen) out of them.

If people buy them, then to a seller they are hardly worthless. Reminds me of a lesson offered by a gentleman who made and sold fishing lures. As he explained it, to be successful in the fishing lure business your lures don't have to catch fish, just fisherman.

Wasn't there a fad awhile back for those compressed manure 'sculptures'? Rabbits and kitties and so forth, that you would put in the garden to fertilize as they dissolved into the soil.

And we can't forget Saturday Night Live's "Litter Critters," which stray from gardening just a bit, but funny as heck.

It's realy subjective if you ask country kids about dry vs "fairly fresh".
In the country version of city kids in a water balloon fight ,dry is prefered for long distance, whereas "fairly fresh"can be extremly effective at close range. The most formidable attack I ever witnessed was executed by two girls using skills learned from thier Mohawk grandfather for a native american game similar to lacrosse called tewaarathon. Unbeknown to the neighboorhood boys,Penny and Stella stashed a supply of carfuly chosen dry and "fairly fresh" near a calf creep feeder they had chose as thier fortress. Penny using her crosse acted as gunner and little Stella prepared projectiles consisting of dry chips with dabs of "fairly fresh" on them. They pinned five boys down and forced unconditional surrender. The occasional attempt to rush the girls was turned back by pig pen corn cobs. For the benifit of those unfamilar with cobs that have been in a pig pen several days, they feel like somthing between small sticks of firewood and pieces of concrete when they hit you.

Curious klem - you seem to have up close and personal knowledge of the attack waged by the girls. You didn't happen to be one of the victims of that attack, or were you?

There used to be a guest ranch near here that made a good business out of hosting corporate outings and team building events. One of the most popular activities, usually saved for late in the day, was competitive cow pie tossing. They used fairly fresh, but they did supply long rubber gloves (the kind used in animal husbandry) for the contestants to use.

Well not intentionaly. The plan was to only scare the girls with threats of "fairly fresh",they would run screaming across the road and that would to be the end of it. Got a lesson instead about mouth overloading a$$.

So are you claiming innocent bystander status? That's your story and you're sticking to it?

Have to respect TX women, even the young ones, especially those that have a pair of nippers in their back pocket (and I suspect you know the kind of nippers I'm referring to).

"Handcrafted Vegan Compost"...omg, what a scam. 'Handcrafted' is one of those buzzwords that means almost nothing anymore, and I have no idea wth that would mean as applied to compost. Hand turned as opposed to being turned by a bucket loader? Frankly, the bucket loader does a better job.

And 'vegan' -- holy cow, do people not know that good compost contains worms and insects? What do they do? Screen the pillbugs out of it?

People will plunk down good money for almost anything these days, as long as it has a trendy name.

You got that right Mama. I hear there is a fella in South Tx making a bundle selling cockleburs to "winter guest residents" as porcupine eggs.
