The neighbor's shredded leaves and grass clippings. He thought I would not want them because they were MIXED TOGETHER. LOL I told him a bit about what I do with them, but I think mostly he just wants them gone.

Well, today I started a NEW compost pile!!! So far it only has 4 garbage bags of fine wood shavings and a garbage bin full of UCG and some leaves well mixed along with a lot of water. However I've asked DH to "water" it further with liquid gold whenever he can and we'll start adding our kitchen stuff to it. He still thinks I'm crazy, but that's not new. I'll likely use it for mulch on the perennials in the spring after I've added some alfalfa tea. I'm so pleased, I now have 2 bins, one pile, and one lasagna bed.

You people have certainly contributed to my compost fixation!

I spent the weekend camping. Tomorrow I plan to use the urine from my holding tank in my camping trailer and pour it over my 4 compost piles.

My friend Benny is re-habbing a house for its new owner, who didn't want the previous owner's compost pile!

so he paid Benny to haul it off, & I gave Benny some bulbs for his garden, & we are all happy indeed!

Gave the CP a good mixing---smashing the pumpkins more and added to my CP,,,,,,,,,two more CP's--needed more browns in it....oh well, didn't really need that leaf mold next spring, rather have the compost.

Just one pumpkin for now. After dropping it on top of the leaves, I decided not to add anything else to the pile for a bit....I want to remove most of the leaves and replace with bags of maple leaves. But gotta wait for the stink to subside!

Started new pile today:

3 onion peelings
1/2 ice cream bucket (5) qt of items that should have been in the first pile (oh well, needed the liguid)

and a cardbox box to contain everything in

biobags! We're testing out a coffee grounds composting program at work, and we're using biobags to line the containers. I've been composting the bags at home to see how fast they break down - less than a couple months in the summer.

Big pot of string green beans we grew and I cooked and we decided are gross because they were not stringless!!!

Well, since I'm an urban gardener with no lawn or friends who own landscaping companies (why oh why are we always advised to ask landscapers for grass clippings -- where do people meet these landscapers? landscaper pickup bars?), I added the following

kitchen scraps from my apartment
kitchen scraps from my co-workers
lots and lots and lots of pine sawdust

I know this isn't optimal, but it's what I've got.

The worms got a little bit of my Thanksgiving baking:

egg shells, lotsa egg shells
grated zucchini that was supposed to go into a loaf but ended up in the back of the fridge too long
dryer lint
toilet paper rolls
onion skins
butter wrappers

I have a bucket of veggie peelings and scraps from Thanksgiving dinner to give my compost pile today. SO exciting. Yesterday it got some manure and shredded leaves and shredded paper.

My pile is definitely giving thanks. It got a turkey neck, a dead mousie, an old scrabble board and box and the usual assortment of egg shells, veggie and tater scraps and bread crusts.

I buried the turkey stuff and the mousie well, put the scrabble board and two cinder blocks directly on top the area. The critters gonna have to work to dig those up.

my turkey stuff is going in the tumbler. The veggie scraps went into a pile.

I put the newspaper/seeds/poop from the bird's cage out and forgot to cover it well and it looks like some animals came to dinner.

Ha ha ha! The Scrabble board! Your composting creatures will have a good time with that, dorisl. I hope you threw a dictionary in there too to resolve those nasty spelling disputes.

Finally had the chance today to do some more work on the pile containing the very old bucket of fish. It still smells rather horrid, but whether it's the fish, the rotting pumpkins or something else - who knows. In fact, much of the fish is rotting, with just the bones and fins evident. Anyway, today I added to the pile:

--four paper grocery store bags of shredded or cut up paper napkins, plates, cups, torn up boxes that had contained teas, bandaids, and etc. + many many many many tissues and such.
--the paper bags.
--one very large plastic bag of Starbucks espresso grounds and two smallish silver Starbucks bags of coffee grounds, with filters.
--about 12 pumpkins, squashes, and gourds, already rotting.
--contents of compost bucket, mostly veg and fruit stuff, tea bags, coffee grounds from our French press, but also shrimp shells and the paper the shrimp came wrapped in.
--coffee from a large bag of coffee in a cardboard box, can't recall which place it came from; this stuff's intended for parties and such
--medium-sized bag of leaves, mostly maple, that someone conveniently left next to their garbage can. Naturally, I liberated it. :)

Cleaned out the fountain, again, drained the leaves and fed them to the CP, and the tea went on the house plants, they're soooooooooo happy this evening!
