A book I have says that it is hardy down to zone 4. The nuts are probably hard to pick out, or it would be widely known. In 2005, I bought seed of Juglans hindsii, Juglans mandshurica, and Juglans cathayensis from lawyer nursery. Had some come up, but ended up getting over taken by bindweed. Here is a pic of that seed {{gwi:400159}}
I'm growing these walnuts just as a novelty(experiment)....they're much slower than Butternuts, being about half as tall.....seed were '07 crop from Lawyer Nursery probably resulting in poor germination...They finally received their '08 crop in late April '09, much to late for the long stratification they require and still produce current year seedlings!
BTW, I read they were completely hardy in Edmonton, Alberta
