I only have 1/2 acre. I plan to trade or give away a lot of these. I oversowed everything, some just to see if I could grow them.

Token, Since I'm in Georgia, your posts don't usually get to me - BUT YOU HAVE DOGWOOD SPROUTS!!!!?????!!!?? How did you harvest the seeds? Were they wintersown? I want details - every little step - and pics too - Pics would be very helpful. Nik

Nikki, I didn't take pictures during the harvest or cleaning.

I went around my neighborhood pulling off the red berries once I realized mine in the yard were starting to come off easily. If you wait until they start dropping on their own, you can still get some ripe ones. The squirrels get to them pretty fast, so they are a good indication that they're ripening too.

Some of mine (the small container), came from my parent's tree. They live in SC. I pulled them sometime in October, I think. The others were harvested in late October for sure.

I didn't store them in any special way. The ones I harvested from my parent's place were sown as soon as I removed the red skin. The ones I collected here, they sat on top of a hutch for several weeks. I sowed them on Nov 30. It was still warm here so they got the proper stratification. Then it got cold, warm again, then really cold, and I saw the first sprout in the small container around the middle of February. It took the large container a while to heat up and they began sprouting in early March.

To store them, I just let them dry out with the husks attached. When I'm ready to sow them, I soak them overnight in warm water to soften the skin. I removed it using my fingers. I washed the seeds off as best I could using cool water. And I sowed them the way I do everything else, on top of the soil, no special treatment.

See, here's the rub with Token: does he post pics of marigolds, alyssum or bachelor buttons? Even spinach? Noooooooooooooo. It has to be some Dogwood from Lithuania or terrestrial kelp or something. And, of course, they all grow like kudzu vines and start flowering while they're still in the containers--all of about 3 weeks.

Prof, I killed my alyssum by planting in Dec. I thought I had the perennial kind. Apparently not. My marigolds haven't sprouted. They've only been sown since last weekend. And my spinach seeds must have been duds. Neither the wintersown nor the indoor seeds germinated. I tossed them into the garden after 2 weeks indoors. Still nothing.

So you see...I can't get the simple things to grow, but redbuds, dogwoods, cherry laurel and even columbine are all doing well. The columbine was planted out last weekend.

Oh, I'm adding "terrestrial kelp" to my Wants list right now! And I love the "ides of July" warning. Very funny, and true.

Those are really nice sprouts, token. Growing hosta from seed is really fun, I think--so much variation.

What's a cherry laurel?

They are large shrubs/small trees here in our zone. Mine are Carolina Cherry Laurel and are native to the mountains. I live them because you can prune them hard or just let them grow naturally.

Yep. I have an area I am trying to reclaim thanks to a privet infestation. So the cherry laurel, a native, should help. I keep clearing and planting, clearing and planting.

Thanks terrene. I'm very happy with my success rate this year. Although some containers haven't done too well, the tough ones did. Now if I could only get those Japanese Maples to sprout.

Token: I have Japanese maples. I started them last month and they're a foot tall. Wish I had a camera. ;-)

Don't even talk about my spinach. This year I ordered "Emu" from T&M (I think), and they ran out or discontinued it or something. Sent me Lombardia instead. Planted them like two weeks ago, and the germination has been incredible.

Been planting outside over the last few days. I have no luck with spinach. (My long-deceased grandmother will be be weak if she hears this.) Keep your legs crossed.

My peas are still not sprouting. They were really soft when I planted them out. I direct sowed them though. And this is the first really nice day we've had in a while. I hope the come up. I really want some snow peas.

Prof - Try "Melody" spinach. I stand by them. Maybe I stand by them because they are early and tender. Maybe I stand by them because they never seem to bolt. But most of all I stand by them because I plant them close to the side of the path....

Mock orange seed is just slightly larger than buddleia seed which is like hair. I thought when I first harvested it, that it was the large pod. I figured each flower set one seed. I was way wrong. Inside the pod are hundreds of sliver like seeds. They look like those tiny splinters that cause so much pain. When I was trading, I would just toss in a pinch and probably give away a hundred or more seeds at a time. They're spreading through the woods next to the house. If it weren't so wet, they'd be taking over.

Beautiful babies token, I was glad to see the ity bity daylilies I am hoping for loads of those. My mom has some redbuds and I have to collect some seed for trading and growing this year. It's very cool to see trees starting, we usually don't notice the extra young ones.
