Photos don't do it...you need to stand under her

Maman Cochet, Climbing has been in the ground since February, and I think she intensely resents that old saw about "first year sleeping, second year creeping, third year leaping." She is redefining the word "sleeping". This trellis is 12' wide and 8' tall and the arbor has a 4' walk-thru. She stayed covered with leaves all summer until early October when she started dropping more than half of them over a period of a couple weeks. Then immediately she started popping out new growth. Her new laterals were only a few inches long when we had 2 nights of 31 degrees on October 28th, and I was scared. But the cold didn't phase her at all. She now has an opening flower and half a dozen buds after months of nothing but growing...and growing. Every month or so it takes me an hour or so to tie her close to the trellis because she is armed and on our property line. You can see in the tight shot of the arbor that she is reaching out again. I am seriously thinking of adding a pergola to connect the trellis to the house. We could use the shade all day until 4 o'clock.

Those double windows are over my kitchen sink. Wanna come wash dishes at my house next spring? I am in awe of this rose and dumbstruck at what the future may hold.

That is a big one, certain to become bigger. And it looks great by the way.
Years ago, after reading that the bush form of Maman Cochet was a smaller tea, I tried to grow her in a very large container. Well, she didn't "sleep" the first year, she leaped almost from the moment I put her into the patio pot after getting her mail-order from ARE. She outgrew that large container in one growing season.

This rose has charming blooms that look like they came from an old impressionist's painting.

Randy, this rose has me under her spell so I was compelled to buy the bush form, but I was wise enough to put her in the ground and pick a neighbor (on the other side) who doesn't mind (in fact, encourages) roses overhanging her property. I just hope I have walking room to get by her - 6' from the house to her center.
3 months in the ground but more than a half dozen blooms in her first flush.

Now that's what I'd call a "house-eater", she'll be headed down the road in another year. She's going to be awesome when she has her big flush in the spring.

blackcatgirl, the arbor came from Harbor Freight! I think about $59 with a discount coupon. Just had to put it together - er, rather DH did.

teeandcee, but I wish I had some place else to put the yard waste cans.

Wow, that IS a good deal on the arbor. We have a Harbor Freight nearby that I know hubby wants to check out. :D
