Defoliated trees releafing early fall

We have some young trees that dried out and defoliated recently. Now they are re-leafing out. The concern is that the new growth will be damaged by the frost because it hasn't hardened off yet, and that maybe the tree won't have enough reserves to produce another set of buds for next spring.

One of the trees is a 4 - 5' ht. Stewartia pseudocamellia. It is in the ground in the Asheville, NC area.

The second tree is a rare Acer palmatum cultivar. It is in a container in the Charottesville, VA area. It could be brought indoors for the winter if necessary.

Ideas, anyone?

THANKS!

Kathleen
