Trying to get rid of the mulch volcano
Comments (12)This tree looks pretty young and needs time and care to develop into a nice strong specimen. Grass is a serious competitor to the development of a tree. For the tree's sake, remove the grass and expand the mulched area out to the edge of the canopy (drip line). You don't need to mulch all the way up to the bark; start leaving the beginning of the root flare exposed. You can do this progressively until you have a good 6 inches of clearance from the bark. Be careful about adding any topsoil over the root zone; as little as 6 inches of added topsoil can kill a tree. Adding topsoil buries the feeder roots and until the tree can grow new ones, nutrients are unavailable. If you must, add a shallow-rooted permanent ground cover or bulbs, remembering that as the tree grows they will receive less and less sun. Annual replanting of annuals will greatly set back the tree's development, since tiny feeder roots are destroyed every time the top 6-8 inches of soil is disturbed. So, don't plant annuals under a tree. Please. I don't place edging, bricks, pavers or anything else around my trees because they interfere with the necessary EXPANSION of the mulched area as the tree grows....See MoreWe will be planting grass seed/need border design help.
Comments (13)I think Nancy Walton is on the right path there. I usually recommend lawn only in selected ares for children or pets to play, or as a bit of open space in between plantings. There are so many other more beautiful, low maintenance plants and material options out there that will use much less water and time/work than lawn, and provide for wildlife like hummingbirds and butterflies, and add lots of great form and color to your outdoor space. Sunset Magazine has a great photoset here with some lawn-free garden inspirations: http://www.sunset.com/garden/earth-friendly/lose-the-lawn-low-water-landscaping-00400000041830/ I think lawn right up to the trees could also potentially risk killing your trees, as frequent shallow watering can often cause root rot in trees native to the Western US. Not sure about Arizona Natives, but there are many trees here in California that will die if they have lawn sprinklers beneath them. I think it would be really good to do whatever you can to preserve and accent those great trees you have there. They really make the space already. Comments (4)Wanda, you can not get GMO seeds unless you are certified grower and take a training class, and are in Hawaii. THere may be 1 or 2 sellers on ebay who got a hold of some and propagated them, but, i am pretty sure they are F1 seeds, and the traits will not carry over. GMO papaya is probably much safer than any other GMO. GMO papaya was created by University of Hawaii, and only to stop the ringspot virus. they had no bad intent like Monsanto, to try and sell seeds, roundup, fertilizers etc... but, if still worried get seeds from Mexico. stay away from Hawaiian backyard growers, and those from the Phillipines and India. https://marketlessmondays.wordpress.com/2014/04/29/how-to-know-you-are-growing-non-gmo-papaya/...See MoreAny Groups hosting Tomato/Pepper/Bean seed swaps
Comments (0)Lost my entire collection of Tomato and Pepper seed a few seasons ago. I thought I could be just as happy with the seedlings I get from the store....I’m not. I would like to rebuild, to some extent, my collection. Since this was where I got my start, I figured I would come back here and see if this is where I could resurrect. I was a founding member of the Incredible Edibles, who sadly seem to have disbanded. So I’m hoping someone could point me in the direction of the groups to join that usually do these type of seed swaps. Thanks All...See Moregora
