Saw some new shoots yesterday

I planted some large golden bamboo divisions around July 4th. There were 3 new shoots coming up when I checked them this past evening. I had read that golden will put up random shoots throughout the year, but I was still surprised to see some.

At least I know that they have put out some decent roots over the last few weeks. I planted them with composted manure and ground pine bark fines, then mulched them with pine bark. I watered about every day for the first week, then stopped when we started to get some decent rainfall again. It has rained about every 3 or 4 days since then, between 1 and 3 inches each week.

I have 4 other varieties in the ground that were much smaller than the divisions I took. I expect I'll have to wait until next year to see new shoots from them.

Those new shoots were probably shoots that were going to come up anyway. It takes a lot longer than a couple of weeks for bamboo to get established in the ground and start sending out new rhizome, and then new shoots. So, you may get new shoots next year, or it may be the year after.

Either way its exciting to see new ones pop up. In fact i have two shoots that just sprang up about a foot and a half away from my original P.nuda in just under a week. I dont know if they are new rhizomes or just shoots like kudzu9 said, but seeing the plant being to move is awesome. gluck!

Occasionally a newly planted bamboo will put out skinny new shoots that are called whip shoots. Sometimes these are just above the ground but usually they will bend up. They are, technically, shoots, but they are not the kind of mature shoots you will see after the bamboo gets established. At any rate, it sounds like it's happy with the situation!

Yea I would def have to say mine are whip shoots then, they are bending up just as you described.
