Here are pics of our pool landscaping that were taken earlier this year. The ocotillo have still not leafed out, I think they're dead. The tecoma stans has a little fence around it because our cats love to lay on this plant for some reason.

yellow fortnight lily is an amazing looking plant around pools. I used to own a pool service business, and was impressed when I saw these. Stay away from bougainvillea and lantana, even though it is listed in the pool friendly plant list. Lantana sheds its flowers horribly, and they are small enough to get past many skimmer baskets. Also the plants tend to grow toward the water, and you must trim often. Evening primrose is another good one, and non-messy small palms like pygmy date palms are good. Good luck!

I love the way our canna's look and perform around the pool - pygmy palms in large pots as well as hibiscus in the ground - can you tell we are going for tropical?

We also have a thevetia tree - prolific bloomer and the spent flowers drop straight down to the ground and never blow into the pool!

I'm going for the tropical look. I have some pigmy dates, queens and foxtail palms.

Now I'm looking for some low lying shrubs/plants to "green it up!"

Careful about putting hybiscus too close to the pool. My neighbor did. If the flowers fall into the pool they will badly stain the plaster - if that's the surface you choose for your pool.
