runner cut off from mother plant, will it spread?

A friend of mind is trying to get rid of a running bamboo he inherited. Some of it is also in his neighbor's yard. Does anyone know if he takes it all out of his yard (where it originated), will the bamboo in the neighbor's yard die when it's cut off from the mother plant? If so, any guess as to how long?

Not likely, unless the runner is not allowed to send up any shoots. Thus not enabling it to photosynthesize. And even then it will take a long time to snuff it out. Boo is persistant. The best thing to do would be to get that runner out of the ground as well.

If it sends up shoots in the spring then you know its a problem. I had a runaway which I cut and hacked away at but couldnt get it out of the ground.. I have had to continually check it to make sure I have killed it.. it has persisted for 2 years and now seems finally dead.. I agree get it out of the ground, but if you cant it will send up new shoots again and again until its worn out. Kill all new shoots as soon as you see them.. eventually it will die

I can only comment on clumpers, but it usually take me two full seasons to kill off one in the ground. Chris is dead-on - the most effective way to ensure future eradication is to monitor and lop off any growth that pops up as soon as possible.
