Gonna rip out all the privet for 2 miles?
Don't sweat the privet, while it is in bloom so are a number of other plants.

If the only plant blossoming in yor area for miles and miles was privet, then you might want to put the honey aside for the bees later in the season. But it's more than likely that any honey you get will be from a wide variety of blossoms from a wide variety of plants.

You won't even notice it...unless...all you see for miles and miles is privet, and there's no hope of anything else ever blooming...ever....

Same with Rhododendrons....

Unless theres a whole lot of privet or very few other plants you won't notice it, Here in Alaska we get alot of bees that just do MayDay Chery trees or just do mountain askes because we have so many and so few flowering plants (those two trees, dandelions, white clover and fireweed make up what I would estimate to be 75% of the nectar/pollen bearing blossoms in the city I live in), you can always tell when honey comes from the trees, because its really perfumed, but unless there is enought privet to keep the bees occupied completely don't worry about it

I'm about as newbie as it gets when it comes to bees. What is wrong with privet? What is it even? Thanks for information.

To Viatheist: I'm also new at this bee business. I only asked about the privet (a big shrub covered with tiny white flowers and lots of bees) because it tends to smell like the Betsy Wetsy doll of my childhood. While I loved my doll, the scent isn't something I'd want to spread on toast. I was afraid it might taint the honey. The bee experts tell me in won't. Still, I'm hoping my bees opt for the lavender and citrus I'm also growing.

Privet Honey is some of the best honey you may ever taste. These other comments sound like people that have never tasted privet honey.
