WS Sunflower challenge (height) !

Show me the Sunnies!

Ok.. the challenge is on. Following is a shot of my 6'4" son-in-law standing in front of my sunflowers. Ignore the one over his left shoulder, check out the one behind him, which has since formed it's flowerhead..(2nd picture). Show me your monsters! Charlie the black lab (who can't swim, but that's another story) looks tiny too!

Oooooh, Wendy. Nice!! And the sunflowers too, eh?! LOL!!

Can't do sunflowers here since the deers love them. Sometimes I have success, but I don't plan on them. I'll leave you to grow them for me. :O)

Here's a couple of my tall ones, both winter sown. First is Joe Pye which is reaching the 11 feet mark and just starting to bloom.

Here is Inula Goliath, probably at 10 to 11 feet as well.

I had some Phlox Paniculata grow to 8 feet this year that the deers didn't get. They are from my mother's gardens. The wind got them, but I'm not staking since now I don't have to reach up to smell the lovely perfume. A bit blurry...

Tall glass of water! The tallest thing I have is Rudbeckia laciniata and it's about 6 feet.

Oh Tiff! You're bad! (But you should see him in his EMS uniform....you really think about calling 911!)
He and my daughter just had their first baby yesterday..little girl, 8lb 11 oz, 21" long!
I'll be showing her how to wintersow in, what, 3 years?

Oooh I love tall showy flowers! Nice pics!

I "inadvertantly" grew Mammoth Grey stripe this year - they reseeded themselves from last year, and I just let them grow. Last year, they were only about 5-7 feet tall. This year they are 10-11 feet! I didn't really think about how tall they'd be, they're kinda in the middle of shorter plants and now they're blocking the sunlight for the Yvonne's Salvia in the afternoon.

They look like a herd of giraffes in the garden! At least they're making flower heads, and that's pulling them down and making them a bit shorter.

    Bakemom,

I have the Lanciniata too, also known as the Outhouse Flower here. In some sections it grows just to 6 feet, but up against the house they grow to 10 feet. I need to do something about staking them properly.

    Wendy,
Congratulations on the new arrival!! Sounds like a healthy solid baby. Give the parents our best wishes. :O)

    Terrene,
Nice ones! I find that when ma nature plants, she usually monopolizes on the best spots.
