Where have I been living?? mars??

I was amzaed last night..went to walmsrt and finally someone had somelil seed starting gh's. Last year I got mine at HD, paid about $15 for a lil one with 12 or 18 peat pellets. Well, last night I went to the plant section of Walmart..dont-chya-know they had em for $6!! each has 72 pellets in it! I couldnt believe it! Let me tell you I hated walmart..hardly ever went there. Went there once last winter w/my mom, actually was the only place to buy fish emulsion. Well, I havent gone since then..till they built this new one which opened in Nov, only 5 mins from me..I think once they get all their gardening it will be my second home. $6!!! I still can't believe it! I keep kickin myself in the @$$ for paying so much for such a small one last year. $6!!! I bought 4..I think I may go back and buy more, lol.

I just had to share that..just amazed me..I can start 288 seeds for less than I did 36 seeds last year! now thats a savings! Maybe I have been living on mars to have been paying those prices when all I had to do was go to Walmart to get it soooo much cheaper. This new walmart doesnt have the fish emulsion yet though..gonna have to request it if they dont get it soon.

Great score daniella!!...I don't go to our Walmart every often at all, but their garden supplies are well worth it..Especially for flower pots.

WOW you did pay alot last year. Sorry but that was very high. Glad you found a cheaper route this year. Now you gotta go back to wally world and buy seeds to fill all those holes.

    Daniella

I noticed yesterday our Wal Mart has begun adding the gardening supplies too! :) Same price for mini GH as yours! ($6.00) Also in was 'Superthrive!' Yay!

And I have my eye on one of the new lawnmowers too! lol!

I can see our Walmart from my house. LOL

Thanks Knotz..I saw these really cool planters they had that looked like teacups with saucers..yet they were really big. I told my kids...see those? Tell Daddy I want them for Mother's Day. lol. Actually I think I'd better get some money out of him way sooner..my luck they'll all be gone soon.

Brandy, yes I paid way too much last year, but HD is (or was, lol).. pretty much the only place close that I could run to all the time, (and hey..this is Jersey, everything is expensive here). ANd HD usually has all their stuff earlier anyway, alot of it year round. O I have plenty of seeds to fill those holes! I am having a hard time finding my baby food jars that I use to soak seeds though.

I hate it when you put stuff in a certain place you think is 'safe' so that you'll remember it's there. Then it's even safe from you cuz you have no idea where that safe spot is, lol.

Hey guys, can I use clear plastic dixie cups to soak seeds? For some reason I have always had it in my head that I needed to use glass...I don't know why.

Mike, you're lucky yours has the ST..I still can't find that anywhere around here. My Walmart doesnt even have the fish emulsion yet. (I just watered today with water from the aquarium..had to do a water change anyway, lol)
New lawnmower for the new house! Sounds like a plan!

Linda, that can be dangerous, lol.

I know the cup planters you are talking about. I hinted last year and never got one. They were 20.00 last year. but OH SO CUTE!! I hope you get one.

    Daniella & crew...

I was at Wally World today...HUGE supply of gardening supplies, seeds, many bulbs, ...it was stocked inside and out!!! Massive quantities of seed starter trays (& domes)--72 count w/smaller pellets @ $6. , 25 count w/larger pellets @ $5., the traditional trays with peat pots, additional supplies of extra peat pellets/peat pots in bags, starter growing medium, and the outside was stocked with bags of everything imagineable. They were stocking the seed displays as I was there. Maybe their thinking is: economy is bad--more people are going to be planting seeds this year. Well they are ready over here!!

    Getting ready for Springtime!!!

Daniella, I'm glad you found your lil' GHes. So you took the old space shuttle out of your galaxy & boldly went where.....well,you know the rest! ROTFLMAO
Yes, you can use the little plastic dixie cups for soaking seeds.

Good deal Daniella. It's amazing when we aren't looking for stuff, we find it, and when we need something, we can't find it! I have some of those seed trays in the garage that I bought several years ago VERY cheap. Just Sat. I used one of the smaller ones to plant some datura seeds from Elizabeth and ebay (also have some going on from Carmen). As soon as I see sprouts, I will offer the extra seeds.

Wow, Daniella, I'd say you got sc***ed on the price of the small greenhouse last year lol. I think I'd be sifting and sterilizing potting soil and using tupperware if they were that high here! I'm glad you got a good larger one now.

I always use the little 3oz plastic dixie cups to soak seeds. You can write the name or cross of the seeds on with sharpie. When you are done you can wash them out to reuse and the sharpie wipes off with alcohol :)

Our wally world just got a ton of diff. canna, caladium, garden amaryllis, dahlia, glads, and calla lily bulbs in.
They sold off the old larger amaryllis bulbs from xmas in fancy containers for 1.oo, so I bought 3 diff ones. (Pink and White, Hot pink, and an Orangish color.

I love wally world's garden section. I need to go see if our walmart has put out anything I can't live without. LOL

Maybe, I will get there today.....

I went to get some of those seed starters & my Walmart doesn't have them in yet. They said it was too early! Wait until I see the manager!

Go to the Dollar Store and buy some of those translucent plastic storage boxes, the largest ones you have room for. Turn them upside down, and they make GREAT mini greenhouses! I use the plastic trays Wal-Mart sells meat in to hold my peat pellets, then place the upside-down storage bin over it as a topper. Small ones are good for seeds, larget ones are good for cuttings.

    Call me CHEAP. (*grin*)

msbatt, That is a good idea on the meat trays and plastic boxes.
I use the styrofoam mushroom trays, either to hold tiny pots or cut holes in the bottoms to use as mass seedling trays. The tomatoes and potato/macaroni salads come in little plastic trays of various sizes with a fold over lid. I think strawberries are sold in them now too. You can cover the holes and/or gaps around the edges (once the lids are closed) with clear tape and use them as mini greenhouses too. Then you can set your little peat pellet refills right inside them.
I also like to use the clear plastic cake containers that the bakery cakes come in for larger 'greenhouses'.
I love cheap that way you can grow MORE plants!! :P

Okay now everyone else give us some more 'cheap' ideas!

Thanks for the answers on the plastic cups..gonna have to go to the $ store today and get some.

Brandy, yeah they are $20 this year too. I think they'd be so cute for the pool area. Or..I got these 2 wicker chairs out off the curb a couple weeks ago..They are in good condition except the one seat side is pushed down, I can clamp it and fix it, but plan on putting a plant on the seat either way. The leg is broken on the second one, I plan on fixing that one too, and putting a plant on it, maybe some big ol bushy ferns..I could put a little table in between them with 2 teacup planters on it..I think that'd look cute. Well, in my head it does, lol.

MJ, I wish mine had that much stuff already! I can't wait till it does! I love Snoopy..he's so cute.

LOL Theresa, yeah I ventured out of my lil Daniella Realm. It's scary out there, lol

ooo El, what kind did you start?

Yeah Lenette, I def got screwed last year.live n learn I suppose! I know better now! I was reusing potting soil, lol. Nice find on the Amaryllis! I suppose they are done blooming already?

Linda, that sux..I hope they get them in soon!

Msbatt, I did that last year too, but I used the lids from the containers and the trays.

I have also used the fruit clamshell containers. I have some cake containers I plan on using as well..too bad Walmart didnt have the reg peat pellets w/out the dome & tray. So I still have to wait on that.

now my main prob is..where the heck am I gonna do this, lol.

Holy crap I can't believe how much HD wanted for the GHs! Another cheap idea I was reading is to use the zipper bags that bedding/blankets come in to start seeds in. Its also taller.
I bought one of those teacup planters last year. They had blue and polka dot so I got blue. Then they got different ones in that I liked better but oh well. I wonder if there is a type of paint that would stick to them if I painted mine?
Here is mine with a kitty in it, lol. Then another pic to show that she doesn't have evil red eyes all the time, lol.

Oh Shawn that is such a cutie! the cup photo...priceless lol!

I used a lot of the rotisary chicken dishes for the winter sowing. Top already has little holes and botton got some from me.

Theresa, I started some lilac, white, triple yellow, triple purple and another yellow that is possibly also triple.

Last year, my DD used those large tea cuts for a raffle at their fund raiser. She put potted plants in some and other gifts in others. Don't know where she got them from, but I know she didn't pay a lot!

wow, I just reread my OP...geez, the way I was typing you'd think I was drunk at the time, lmao.

OMG Shawn, that kitty in a cup is so cute!! I love that pic! She is a beautiful cat. lmao cuz I must have really shocked you with that price I paid..I don't think I have ever seen you type in "holy crap" before, lol!!
You mean to like add deisgns onto yours? I think you could paint over that with some craft paint..But you'd have to re-glaze it. They have spray glaze you can buy though, easy to use. I like your the way it is.
heres my kitty in a pot, lol..

    {{gwi:448035}}

Swiper has always loved to be IN things..I have so many pics..o and yeah, those flowers are fake, lol..o hey speaking of painting things..I painted that flower pot! lol.

That cat is a cutie too. Looks real comfortable in there...lol. I was actually talking about painting the whole thing or maybe just painting the saucer so it matches the pot.

I suppose you could just paint over the whole thing, glaze and all and then re-glaze. That's what I would do, but you could always use some really fine sandpaper to rough it up where you want to paint it, then paint and glaze. If you don't glaze it after you paint, it will chip and wear away easier. Glazing will make it last longer, & it makes it easier to clean..won't have to worry about the paint coming off. I wouldn't use spray paint, I'd brush the paint on.
That pot in my pic was a glazed hideous green color. I didn't rough it up, and I never got around to glazing it. Just plain craft paint. Right now it's in my basement with a passi in it..paint chipped off a little cuz it was outside all summer. ANother fun lil project for spring, paint it again when I repot the passi. I'll glaze it this time, lol.
I think if you painted the saucer the same color blue as the cup it wouldn't look right..just my opinion. It'd be too much of the one color...ya know? Maybe a lighter or darker blue though.

Shawn, What kind of finish is on it now? If it is ceramic (like a dinner plate), you can sand it, prime it & paint it with whatever kind of paint you like. You cannot re-glaze it with ceramic firing-in-a-kiln type glaze. You can use the no-fire colors or acrylic craft paint or outdoor paint, etc & then spray or paint on a protective clear coat.

    Linda

    lol, I never prime anything.

Daniella I am shocked. FAKE flowers?

    Lucy

lol Lucy..they are like 10 years old, from before I started gardening, cuz I had nowhere TO garden..they were my fix till I could get some dirt to play in. For fake flowers they sure did last a long time, they're gone now. That pic was from almost 2 years ago.
    I love that graphic! LOL!
