I'll undoubtedly have some, but I don't think they'd do. The suckers I find appear to all be connected to the mother plant without any decent roots of their own, totally dependent on the original plant. I'll check though - maybe some will have decent roots.

Ditto I have read that it is very difficult to transplant suckers from this tree. Apparently They fail to establish when separated from the parent tree. There are a couple small Sassafras groves in a nearby woodland, and I would have like to transplant a couple, but fear that the suckers would not survive.

William Cullina says this about the tree on his website: "Sassafras root sprouts are difficult to transplant, giving the tree an undeservedly difficult reputation. Seedlings are easily moved and they grow quickly and easily in well-drained soils and at least 4 hours of sun. "

I know that they're difficult to transplant, but it's not impossible. I've read on other forums here about people who have successfully transplanted them. I want to at least try to get some planted here. It would be so cool to see spicebush swallowtails here, and any other species that they attract.

I have transplanted several in my yard I found single small seedlings and dug those with no problem. None of these were from a larger tree.

I just dug a volunteer that came up under my oak tree. It's a sassafras seedling not a sucker. It came up in either 08 or 09 and is about 20 inches tall. No guarantees. It might transplant ok but they have a bad reputation for that. If it dies, I can watch for more though.
