It has been a couple or three days and no one is responding so I will just toss in some of my experiences in Phoenix.

I quickly abandoned most attempts at vegetables in the summer. I had moderate success with a plant called Armenian Cucumber for some reason. I rather like this fruit (vegetable?) and seem to recall it took the summer heat fairly well as did zucchini. Not wonderful mind you, just fairly well.

My favorite gardening venture in Phoenix was not winder sowing but summer sowing of Cole crops. In summer I would plant the seed and protect the seedlings and transplant them out in late, Phoenix, summer. They would survive the chilly early morning hours and the short days and produce flavorful vegetables. I particularly like broccoli harvested after the first frost.

Careful, planted out too early and they will bolt.

thanks albert 135, I'll have to look for some of those cucumbers. I've had pretty good luck with tomatoes in large pots that I move around, still have one cherry tomatoe that I started from seed last winter. Its starting to make a few tomatoes but I know I won't get many as it will start getting to cool at night. I'm hoping to keep it going until next spring by moving it under my carport that is partial closed in with lattice.

I'm in the process of building a new raised bed and am hoping to be able to cover it part of the time with shade cloth. Also planning to put a sprinkler system in it which will help alot.
