OT: if it could go wrong..........

It does. I went for my outpatient procedure this afternoon. Unfortunately the stent has migrated completely out of my bladder and deep into my kidney. The distal end of the stent is out of reach of the scope so I've been scheduled for yet another surgery on Thursday. This will be inpatient with general anesthesia and to add insult to injury I'll have to have another outpatient procedure about a week later. My surgeon said that he's heard of this happening but it's very rare and he's never actually seen it. I held my composure while talking to him after the failed procedure today but completely lost it by the time I got to my car. I just feel like it will never end. I was so excited today thinking that it was finally over. Sorry for the whining but I'm really depressed. I guess I should be thankful that it's not something more serious but having these "surprise" weekly surgeries is really getting to me.

Awww Karyn, Im so sorry, bless your heart.
Something simalar happened to my sister, she went in to
have her bladder tacked back up, went through the surgery
went home and at her next Drs. visit he told her she would
have to have surgery again, a piece of sponge was left
inside and he had to go in to retrieve it, and get this
they charged her for the whole operation again!!!
I hope this time everything goes better for you, keep your
chin up sweetie, you`ll be in my thoughts and prayers.

Geez! What is happening to the medical profession??!! I am hearing about so many botched surgeries that have to be redone due to negligence and you can't sue them for some %#$@*& reason! Karyn--my prayers are with you and try not to let it get you down--just remember you have many friends here and family that will be there for you. (((Karyn))) Big hugs!

It's not a matter of negligence. It's an extremely rare complication. It just figures that I'd experience it : ( This will be the 4th procedure and 3rd general anesthetic in 2 weeks with a probable 5th procedure to follow. This sucks!

I hate to hear that Karyn. I know how it feels after 2 neck surgeries and the shoulder surgery and still having the same pain. I have been avoiding going back too. I am finally losing some of the weight I gained after all the shots and surgeries. I need to regroup before I deal with it again. I hope they get it straightened out for you. I know you don't like being sick and having to keep going back. Keep your chin up chick. It'll be over soon and you will be all better.

Sorry to hear you have complication with the surgery, Karyn. When I was doing my clinical in a community hospital, I saw so many difficulties. Hang in there, the important thing to do is ask a lot of questions like "why? how the procedure are perform? what cause the complication? who is perform the operation? " and always get second opinions and keep a journal of all imfo. A lot of questions made people more conscientious about their job.

good grief, Karyn! thinking of you, for sure...

    Oh Karyn - I am sooooooooooo sorry. . . .

In patient, so you're staying over nite? Is he going to keep you this time to monitor your progress?

We'll all be thinking of you and I'm so very, very sorry you're going through this.

Has he given you a time frame on how this impacts your other procedure?

So very sorry you're going through this.

So sorry to hear about this new complication and the need to have surgery. Hang in there. Sometimes it seems like that black cloud hangs over our head way too long, but soon things will be better and you will feel renewed. We are all praying for your quick healing of mind, body and spirit.

Thanks for the well wishes. I'm just sick and tired of this and want to be done already. Dweeb I'm being admitted as an inpatient but am going to try and convince them to release me after I get out of the recovery room. Surgery isn't scheduled till 1pm so I'm not sure when I'll be done. If I'm feeling even halfway alright I'll probably sign myself out AMA. It depends on what they have to do to get it out. He said it might be an easy quick procedure or it could take a few hours. With the way my luck has been running it will probably be the latter. lol We figure that the stent probably migrated last Sunday because that's when all my pain disappeared. Most people have some amount of discomfort from the end of the stent irritating the bladder. At least my Mom is back in town and she can take care of the kids.

Okay sorry BUT I just had to share...

A sweet grandmother telephoned St. Joseph's Hospital. She timidly asked, "Is it possible to speak to someone who can tell me how a patient is doing?"
The operator said, "I'll be glad to help, dear. What's the name and room number?"
The grandmother in her weak tremulous voice said, "Norma Findlay, Room 302."
The operator replied, "Let me place you on hold while I check with her nurse."
After a few minutes the operator returned to the phone and said, "Good news. Her nurse has told me that Norma is doing very well. Her blood pressure is fine. Her blood work just came back as normal and her Physician, Dr. Cohen, has scheduled her to be discharged Tuesday."
The grandmother said, "Thank you. That's wonderful! I was so worried! God bless you for the good news."
The operator replied, "You're more than welcome. Is Norma your daughter?"
The Grandmother said, "No, I'm Norma Findlay in 302. No one tells me sh**."

I'm home. It went pretty well but I'm scheduled for another procedure on Monday. That better be the end of this ordeal. I'm uncomfortable, not really pain, just discomfort but I would have told them that I was ready for a triathalon just to make sure they didn't keep me at the hospital! One of the things that bothers me the most is my throat from the ET tube. For some reason I don't ventillate well with the pharyngeal airway. During 2 of the procedures they've had to switch to an ET tube.

Glad to hear from you Karyn and that you are doing pretty well. Uncomfortable is better than bad pain. Eat a halls cough drop. It might help some and drink plenty. Get some rest.

Karyn, I completely missed this post and hope you are feeling better. It all sounds very painful to me, but I'm one of those people with a low tolerence to pain. Good luck on Monday, will be thinking about you.

Karyn, so glad to hear you got to come home and that every
thing went pretty well, keeping you in my thoughts and
prayers that it will go smoothly on Monday too.

    Karen

Karyn - Hopefully you'll be home free after Monday's OP procedure.
Gardenpaw- Your relative should be camping in in that surgeon's office or contacting her state's board of Medical Practice. There is no waaaaay she should have been charged for fixing a procedural error (and a retained object is a big error!). Either she or her insurance should have all expenses related to the 2nd procedure refunded.......not a doctor nor an attorney but I've worked 35 yrs at a topnotch medical center and having to pay to fix an error made on their part is just plain wrong.

Karen I missed that post about a sponge being left inside your relative. That's just plain negligence. After every procedure a sponge count is done prior to closure. If it doesn't match up an X-ray is taken to see if it's been left in the patient (all sponges contain a radiopaque thread). Someone dropped the ball big time with that surgery! I'm glad she recovered and didn't end up with peritonitis.
