Who sells lots of Fruit Trees, San Jose area or Watsonville?

Hi!

I live in Santa Cruz, but, at my local nursery, they are out of the special fruit trees I want to buy. San Jose, South Bay area is good for shopping though I don't know it very well. Is Four Winds just citrus? I'm looking for real small dwarf fruit trees, apple and pear with multiple varieties grafted together. Is Summer Winds the biggest nursery for that? And is there one store that has the best selection?

It would be nice to know where the help is most knowledgeable too, though not as important as finding a big selection.

Anywhere around Santa Cruz, like Watsonville Salinas area where they might have what I'm interested in I'd love to hear. I don't mind driving to get what I want. Thank-you Central Coasters.

You might check with Aladdin Nursery in Freedom.

In the San Jose Area, Almaden Nursery and Payless Nursery, although the stock at both places are semi-dwarf with the exception of some of the peaches and nectarines.

Summer Winds as a GREAT selection of fruit trees (I can't find it hosted online though at the moment). Just about any kind you can imagine (multiple grafts, inter specific hybrids etc) that they get from Dave Wilsons. The problem is you have to put your order in around the end of October/beginning of November I believe, so they make sure to get it and save it for you.

If you don't have any luck finding what you need this year then this is a good option. Dave Wilson's has an excellent reputation, and the peach tree I received was very healthy and vigorous. I do hope you find what you're looking for! Thought I'd throw this out there just in case though.

Almaden Valley Nursery on Almaden Expressway has LOTS of fruit trees. However, they're pretty much all potted and cost $30 and up.

Summerwinds has a smaller selection, but they have mostly bare-root trees (except, of course, for the citrus), which are generally 1/4 - 1/3 the price of a potted tree.

Yamagami's in Cupertino also has lots of fruit trees, although I don't know whether they're bare-root or potted.

Another option is mail order. If you want bare-root, and don't find what you want at a local nursery, you can order from Peaceful Valley (www.groworganic.com). They sell Dave Wilson bare-root stock for a good price ($7.99 for a blueberry bush vs. $12.99 at Summerwinds), and the shipping's pretty reasonable if you order more than a few items. Raintree Nursery and Bay Laurel Nursery are other options for buying online.

Gee thanks Wanda, Lemonwater, and Kim, all you Zone Niners.
It's nice to know that there are some central coast people on this forum. I'm going to check all these nurseries out.

How about our 78 degree weather? My roses are springing to life. Go back to sleep, my babies. I will prune them this weekend, but I am worried that they are leafing out and making buds too soon.

On the subject of fruit trees, we have just a small city lot, we're growing roses and vegetables, but we want some fruit trees and we want to get the smallest ones that will do OK. We're not trying to be self-sufficient, we just want some pretty little trees, that will produce a little fruit and not take up too much room.

    Anyway, thanks.

Thanks a lot for these nursery names! Though I really like going to Summerwinds, sometimes I go late and their fruit varieties get sold out rapidly.

Summerwinds, in addition to taking advance orders, also keeps some stock in early January.

I checked the groworganic.com however they do not have Ultra-dwarf fruit trees. I found them at Summerwinds couple weekends back. Especially good for a small urban backyard.

Any other online nurseries selling Ultra-dwarf bare-roots?

To get bareroot dwarf, I guess you would order it (eg: BUD-9 rootstock for apple) directly from Dave Wilson and the coordinate nursery. I found this out a bit too late for this season but might consider it next year.

Payless Nursery only has dwarf peach and nectarine in pots for about $40. The multi-bud varieties are about $40-$50 (depending on how many varieties).

    Gala,
Check out the Dave Wilson website. They recommend summer pruning of the fruit trees to keep them under 12'.
