Kalanchoe thyrsifolia???

OK first did I get the ID correct? I bought this guy today at a local nursery that just got them in this week and had not even removed them from the boxs. It was still in plastic in the shipping box and to say the least they did not look good. First I pulled a snail off of it, second it is absolutely water logged and lastly it has some considerable damage to lower leaves. BUT, I'm hoping with the amazing advice from some of you I will save it.

My first thought is to let it dry out a bit, then is it OK to cut off the damaged leaves? Should I cut them close as I can to the stalk? How long til I should repot this guy and should I wait to remove the leaves?

All advice is greatly appreciated. If I am missing something I could use that information too.

A little close up of some of the damage to the leaves. I think most of the damage other than this shot is from shipping.

Looks pretty sad, but it will likely survive... new leaves should be OK. This is Kalanchoe luciae, often mislabeled as K thyrsiflora. This one looks like it got baked... can't even tell if this a variegated or just badly damaged form of this species. You can cut any and nearly all leaves off if you like (most should just 'snap off' at the stem). Leave those that look OK, though.

Thanks lzddr. I pulled a few leaves off. Should I keep it pruned so that leaves are not rubbing on the rim of the pot? Or is it just a matter of taste. Hopefully this picture is a little better representation of the overall condition.

Thanks for straightening me out on the ID.

As Geoff said, it's K. luciae, the beautiful variegated 'Fantastic'. Nice score, even if damaged. Glad you found the snail. Hope you gave it a proper ending. =) I think you can repot right away -get it to dry out.

This plant can take a good bit of sun as long as it is not too hot. I allow mine afternoon shade here in Texas during the summertime but it gets a great deal more sun in the winter. I am Z8b so I can leave it outside most days of the winter. It came in one night this winter. Mine is starting to turn greener now that it is warming up but it was solid red earlier.

Great catch of a wrong name. The mistake was caught by John Trager (curator) of the Huntington Gardens, he then printed the correction in the CSSA Journal, I actaully scaned the name and picture on this formum to make the correction with the article that was written. We send out to the main Whole Sale house that were growing them. I am so glad that the correction was made here. This group is really sharp, Teenager you have joined a excellent group where you can leaarn. I will have long white flowers, and offsets from the base. Norma

When i bought this guy, the lady told me it was a Kalanchoe. When I asked what type she looked at me and said "succulent keep it dry and you'll be fine". I pretty much knew I was on my own at that point. Anyhow I may have a new favorite plant, going to trim it up a little more and find it a new pot and soil today.

    Thanks for some good information.
