Sacramento C&S show & sale May 2nd & 3rd

For a small club this is one of the better shows in N. CA, IMO better than NorCal. There's some high quality specimens, outstanding cacti and succulents. It was mostly a cacti club, there some succulents but not many fat plants.

You know you have a reputation when the chairperson for the show contacts you and asks "how many fat plants are you entering? how many big ones? we need to make sure we space for you."

I've been spending the last month or so prepping and I think I got it all together. This is the proposed list, buy I may drop it down to twenty.

1. Kedrostis Africana

2. Cyphostemma juttae

3. Petopentia natalensis

4. Pachypodium horombense

  1. densiflorum
  2. brevicaule

    7. Operculicarya pachypus
  3. hyphaenoides
  4. sp. Nova

    10. Euphorbia trichadenia
  5. itrimensis
  6. beharensis v. guillemettii
  7. waringrae

    14. Tylecodon paniculata
  8. wallichii
  9. reticulata

    15. Pterodiscus ngamicus

    16. Fockea edulis

    17 Ipomoea bolusiana

    18. Pachycormus discolor

    19. Commiphora humbertii

    20. Fouquieria fasciculata
  10. purpusii

    22. Pelargonium triste
  11. carnosum
  12. rapaceum

    25. Calibanus hookerii

    26. Othonna triplinervia

    27. Adenia perrieri

    28. Aloe plicatilis

    29. Avonia ustulata

    30. Mirabilis jalapa

So I guess you take moving vans to shows? :-)

Seriously though, having the organizer contact you really speaks volumes to the impressive nature of your collection! Wish I could see them all!

Which of those will you bring down for Intercity?

No van but a big truck. Once I get everything staged at the show I'll be taking photos then posting so everyone will get to see.

As for Intercity at these will be making the trek so you'll get to see a few up close and personal
    Cypho juttae
    Fockea edulis
    Petopentia natalensis
    Oppie pachypus and hypaenoides
    Calibanus hookerii

More plants will be awake by then so I'll have more to choose from, hoping Xerophyta retinervis will be in full leaf by August!

What, no encore performance of your F. fasisciculata? That is one I *really* want to see in person!

Was your Xerophyta imported without leaves? I thought they kept all their leaves during droughts and would green-up again at the first heavy rain.

We are but dwarves in the presence of a giant.
Look forward to any pix from the show!

Well...if you want to see the fasciculata that bad I'll squeeze it in somewhere ;o)

The Xerophyta was leafless and bareroot when I got it 2yrs ago, was cut back for shipping. Last year it put out some leaves but I didn't water enough, this time I'm watering every day and it is starting put out some new growth. Made a special pot just for it, one that drains poorly. Opposite of what usually try to do.

D'oh! I keep forgetting that in this strange, twisted world I'm in the same division as you, and really shouldn't be encouraging you to bring any more of your competition crushing plants! ;-) But seriously, that is one of my favorite plants of yours, and I really would love to see it. :-)

Cool. Can't wait to see pictures of your Monkey's Tail (not big on common names, but that one is just so darn cool!) in its low drainage pot...

Unfortunately this was not a judged show, the public voted.
After the vote the chairperson turns the tag over the owners name shows. I kept hearing "who's Keith?" Where's Keith?" Everyone wanted to meet the guy with the biggest, ugliest plants entered. The succulent division was at least half my plants.

...and I made about 2/3 of the pots.

Did you hear that? It was the sound of my jaw hitting the floor. Seriously Caudex, you have an amazing talent.

There are so many in there I don't even know where to start. The Petopentia is too cool! That pot just looks so awesome. It has such an organic, living appearance.

Is that terra sigillata on the pot with the Ipomoea bolusiana? I love the contrast in texture and color, but the strong complimentary forms.

I'm sure all the dormant fatties were well received by the public ;-) "Why would you bring in a dead plant?!"

    last modified: 11 years ago

    Thanks Jo!
I've had the Petopentia for years in a plain ol' nursery pot never knowing what to do with it, then i started making pots and I created the vision I had for it.

That is terra sig on the black pot, many commented on that combination. I did hear the occasional "that plant looks dead" through out the weekend.

Added a few more fatplants photos and started labeling them.

    I'll start the cacti next.

I also love the F. purpusii!
    Beautiful plants all around!
    Cheers,

Beautiful plants....and it looks as though I missed a wonderful show again....

Regretfully, I could not make it Sunday....though I'd held hope to the last minute.
I really wanted to shake the hand of the man himself!
    Alas! Perhaps next year?
