I Really Hate Those Pesky Rabbits

What a week. Neighbors took down the fence between our yards for repair & left it wide open for 2 days. Rabbits moved in & are eating ALL my peas. They open the pods & remove just the ripe ones, passing up the flat pods. Now they are mashing the plants down & killing them. They are covered in unripe peas at the top. A million bottom ones... all empty. I picked 1 pod today, it was all I could find after the 1st picking of 2 gallon buckets full a few days ago (delicious!). I should have had plenty, I planted three 4'x 16' Square Foot raised beds full. I pictured peas canned, peas frozen, peas in salad or stirfry & just plain out of the pod. All gone. Even if I trapped it tonight, I have lost over 3/4s of my harvest. I sat in the garden & cried.

I cried again when I found out the fence people stepped on 4 tiny Brug seedlings too. And I downright bawled my eyes out yesterday when I went through the Brugs that didn't sprout this spring. It made me sick to compost 150+ 5-6' plants. I checked the stems & knocked off the dirt & checked all the roots on every one to make sure. I did find 1 seedling that made it. I need to go through the last 50 or so today. I've waited & watered long enough.

Good news though, I got Jamie, 10 Sang seeds & 20 seed plug trays on ebay & I'm high bidder on a temp greenhouse. Yay, but I really gotta stop cheering myself up like that.

Linda what a blow to a great start. But like you said...if it is not the Rabbits...it is the 2 legged ones. Or the deer. Or the grasshoppers. and on and on and on.

Why did so many seedling plants die? Where did you have them?

    I'm fighting armadillos!

Did you know an armadillo will dig a brug out of the ground?

I replant every day --- daylilies, brugs, hostas, caladiums, etc.

Now, he/she is turning over my potted plants and digging in them.

    I think it's time for a shotgun.

Lucy, The heaters tripped the breakers a couple times & the electric was off a couple times due to weather. Once would have been OK but it was just too much. It got cold enough to freeze a 1/2" thick layer of ice on the cuttings in a milk jug. Some made it from my friend's basement (her elec was off too) but I lost everything that was on the side near a door & window. Some from my porch made it & most of the smaller plants, Snowbank, & the cuttings that I kept under lights.

Amelia, Will a fence keep them out? We used to shoot the rabbits but we have houses all around us now & I'm pretty sure they wouldn't like it. I have everything fenced to keep my dogs in & the skunks, rabbits, loose dogs etc can stay on their side. So far no bears or bobcats have came in. Must be easier to tip over trash cans & eat from pet bowls.

Sorry to hear you lost so much. I guess I'll break down and get a generator for the backyard greenhouse but if I get another 3 days without power during single digit temps even that's not going to help. We stay at a hotel when we lose power for an extended time and I don't know if DH will be able to keep running home to keep fuel in a generator.

All the woodland critters are cute......in someone else's yard!!!!!!! I have all of 6 persimmons left on my little Fuyu tree and we don't want to talk about everything else they've enjoyed snacking on. Except for electric fencing there's really no other deterrent because of all the rain we've been getting.

    It's always something.

Linda I am so sorry to hear about your pests...I went on vacation last year and came home to total destruction from the deer.... We still shoot the rabbits here otherwise we would have nothing to eat...We did finally put garden fences up to help keep them away.... Holy smokes you have bobcats? I wouldnt garden at all..lol

I could never shoot an animal but do like rabbit as long as it's already cut up and wrapped nice and neat in the grocery store. I made rabbit stew some years back and told DH it was chicken. After he finished I told him it was rabbit and he barfed. lol Another time I made a venison tenderloin that a friend gave me. My DD was about 4 and I was feeling especially mean so while we were having dinner I told her that she was eating Bambi. She looked at me and said "Bambi tastes good". Touche!

That sucks. I have been comenting on how many more rabbits I am seeing this year. CRAZY

My DIL was just telling me that deer don't like the smell of egg, mixed with water, and sprayed on the plants- would it work for rabbits?

And so sorry to hear about your seedlings- I lost quite a few myself, and that really hurts after all the effort that goes into growing them and keeping them over a winter because they did not bloom last year. Well, the ones that survived look like they will bloom this year. I hope that you discover more of the 50 still left to check did survive and that they bloom for you! ~ Brenda

I've tried everything on them, they think egg based spray is a condiment. LOL The neighbors complain if there is an odor (like I enjoy the chemical smells coming from their direction). As they build more houses, the rabbits have nowhere to go. I feel for them but there are literally dozens of them jumping, playing, eating & doing what rabbits do best (make more rabbits) in the unfenced yards. The way they are grinding away at the new clover, I wouldn't think there'd be any room left for my Peas. I'd like to let the dogs in the garden, but I tried that once & they flattened way more than the rabbits ate & didn't catch them.

The bobcats mostly stay in the woods, every once in a while someone will see one. Bears, on the other hand, visit the trailer court about a 1/2 mile from me on a regular basis & were on my friend's car 2 streets behind me. Most people around here haven't seen them. I wish they'd eat the rabbits & deer! LOL

hahah that was a good one Linda

I would be scared as a cat.... Bears on cars lol...What about a pellet gun? I would have a shotgun with bobcats..lol

Brenda the rotten egg, garlic, oil & water mix works well as a repellent for rabbits as well as deer. Nothing is working here now because we've been getting heavy rain almost daily but it will usually last for about 10 days even thru a light shower or two.

Hey, Karyn, that would work for me, too- wouldn't go near the stuff!! Yuck! LOL!

Oh, so you are the ones getting everyone else's rain!!

Karyn that was SO funny. Well to read about it lol. What a sensitive guy you got there ha ha ha

I can not believe the answer your daughter gave you lol

I quit eating rabbits my mom raised for food, when I had to hold one by it's legs one time so she could skin it, and the skin ripped and all the guts came out and it stunk like hell.

That was it for me. any animal that I saw growing up...would not land on MY plate.

I sure wish we would be allowed to put up electric fences.
